Los Alamos National Laboratory IT Deputy Group Manager (IT Manager 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This posting is for the Deputy Group Leader of the Infrastructure Services (IS) Group in the Network and Infrastructure Engineering (NIE) Division in the Business Management Directorate (ALDBUS). Infrastructure Services composes the unseen skeleton that underlies all Laboratory network infrastructure. Infrastructure Services is responsible for providing the following services to LANL users:

  • unclassified and classified institutional compute and storage.

  • operating systems (OS) support for Laboratory Linux business systems.

  • institutional network services for public, unclassified, and classified networks.

  • network engineering architect services.

  • network access credentials and controls.

The Deputy Group Leader will work as a vital member of the Group Leadership team providing technical leadership, group management and operational and administrative support. The Deputy Group Leader will report to the Group Leader and will be responsible for driving operational excellence, acting as the change manager for the group, reporting operational metrics, project management, work package development, deliverables management, and assisting in budget management. The Deputy Group Leader will help motivate group members to achieve and exceed group goals and deliverables; and will help foster a professional, collaborative working environment.

As an important member of the NIE Management team, the successful candidate’s primary responsibilities will be to support the Group Leader with the following:

Leadership

  • Organizational management, including budgeting, forecasting and financial management, capability and staff development, succession planning, personnel, and salary management, and ensuring a safe and secure workplace.

  • Oversight of all aspects of employee performance management for the members of the group.

Technical Competence

  • Oversight of identity management and verification processes, remote access programs, encryption process and communication in and out of our networks.

  • Management of web services infrastructure.

  • Management of Email relay infrastructure.

  • Oversite of virtual private cloud.

Institutional Acumen

  • Manage the NIE-IS work packages, which requires demonstrated stewardship of financial resources, while working under clearly defined fiscal performance expectations as prescribed by the Laboratory’s monthly Business Stewardship Review (BSR) reporting procedure, and other OCIO fiscal reporting requirements.

  • Foster effective working relationships with Laboratory leaders, ALDBUS managers, and customers to ensure effective implementation of ALDBUS and NIE initiatives

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience in leading a team/organization in all aspects of organizational management, capability and staff development, performance, and salary management.

  • Demonstrated experience collaborating across organizational boundaries and the ability to manage customer relationships in a positive manner.

  • Demonstrated experience managing budgets.

  • Experience applying project management principles to set project scope, schedule, priorities, and deliverables.

  • Knowledge of new network technologies, core network services and large virtual environments.

  • Knowledge of configuration management tools/processes.

  • Demonstrated ability to implement and comply with LANL safety and security practices

Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience managing IT services at LANL.

  • Demonstrated experience with external audits.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos with the potential for a hybrid work arrangement (partially onsite/partially offsite) from a location within 2 hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite will be periodically required. Hybrid is at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
