Los Alamos National Laboratory Institutional Data Services Developer (Software Developer 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

T his position will be filled at either the Software Developer 2/3 level, depending on the skills and experience of the selected candidate.

As a member of our Software Development staff in the Software Applications and Engineering Group (SAE-3), you will have the opportunity to work and grow in an exciting and challenging environment dedicated to delivering quality software using modern technologies. As part of our diverse multidisciplinary team, you will have the opportunity to grow in the areas of programming, software architecture, User Experience design (UX), Agile software development and software engineering.

To support LANL’s national security missions, our Software Developers are responsible for:

  • Working closely with end-users on requirements gathering and delivering of secure and quality web-based applications.

  • Configure, automate, maintain, and document continuously integrated product builds and deployments.

  • Research new technologies and tools; incorporate their usage into new products and services.

  • Communicate and collaborate cross-functionally, and work well in a product focused team environment.

  • Develop, implement and maintain software applications. Build new capabilities and refactor existing code of applications.

We are looking for a team player that can learn our system, support our customers, and provide ideas and solutions to improve what we have.

Please note, we will hire for this position based on the candidate’s experience. The following describes the job levels in general. Specific requirements for this position are listed below in the “minimum job requirements” section below.

Software Developer 2 ($75,400 - $122,900)

  • The Software Developer 2 is a seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of a specialized information technology (IT) field plus working knowledge of other related IT fields.

  • Resolves a wide range of issues in creative ways.

  • This job is the fully qualified, career-oriented, IT professional position.

  • Provides resolutions to a diverse range of complex problems where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.

  • Contributes to the development of the organization's goals and objectives.

  • Works under limited direction; receives general instructions on new assignments.

  • Work is evaluated upon completion.

  • May provide limited technical direction and/or coordinate activities of other personnel.

  • Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

  • Determines approach to solutions, plans schedule and arranges own activities in accomplishing objectives.

  • Maintains required safety and security training, assures safety and security compliance, and makes safety and security an integral part of every task, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.

  • Fosters a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

  • Adheres to Laboratory and Division policies and programs concerning the Laboratory's information systems.

Software Developer 3 ($91,800 - $151,400)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, the Software Developer 3 has wide-ranging experience, uses professional concepts and company objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.

  • Frequently contributes to the development and/or implementation of new technical standards and methods.

  • Considered an expert in the field.

  • Develops resolutions to complex problems that require the frequent use of creativity and where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors.

  • Work is accomplished without considerable direction and/or coordinates activities of other personnel.

  • Exerts significant latitude in determining objectives of assignment, and determines the methods and procedures needed for new assignments.

  • Experience arranging, preparing and conducting meetings, workshops and presentations.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience managing and configuring COTS applications.

  • Experience providing solutions for customers.

  • Experience designing, developing, modifying, testing, debugging and evaluating software to meet user requirements.

  • Experience gathering and documenting user requirements.

  • Experience recommending sound, practical solutions to complex issues.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with Agile concepts such as Scrum or Kanban.

  • Experience with Jira, Remedy, ServiceNow, or other work tracking system.

  • Experience writing SQL queries.

  • Familiarity with Confluence.

  • Familiarity with SailPoint IIQ or other Identity and Access Management management system.

  • Experience with application administration in a corporate or enterprise environment.

  • Experience creating or using Web Services.


Applicants must have the ability to obtain and maintain DOE clearances, which normally requires US citizenship.


Software Developer 2 Education Required: Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Software Developer 3 Education Required: Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum eight years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.
