Los Alamos National Laboratory Industrial Engineer (R&D Enigineer 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
Be part of an amazing engineering team here at the nation’s Plutonium Center of Excellence, that supports our Nation’s nuclear deterrent. As an Industrial Engineer you will be providing technical expertise and leadership in the design and development of process and quality improvement programs for the plutonium facility. Being a hands-on Industrial Engineer with project leadership and problem-solving skills to work in our collaborative team environment, you will conduct time studies, develop and implement work standards and participate on new product development teams. Your work will directly support the execution of manufacturing of weapons components, the surveillance of weapon components and materials in the nuclear stockpile, and other national security missions.
R&D Engineer 2 ($91,800-$151,400)
As an R&D Engineer 2, you will be expected to work with members from various process teams in a collaborative manner to collect data, make specific suggestions to collect additional data, analyze data and perform cost-benefit-risk analysis, recommend changes to processes based on the results of the analyses, define post-implementation monitoring and benefits, and help implement the changes. You will be encouraged to be a champion of the change, and make presentations to the team and the upper management at various points of the change study. You will be expected to quickly get familiar with IE models and to conduct simulations with them under the supervision of more experienced staff. Ability to work in a team environment is a must as you will be expected to work with various process teams whose members would have varied levels of experience and expertise with the subject matter. Prior knowledge of lean manufacturing principles, statistical quality control techniques, and industrial engineering simulation tools are highly desirable.
R&D Engineer 3 ($110,400-$186,300)
As an R&D Engineer 3, you will be expected to be able to perform all duties of R&D Engineer 2. Additionally, you will be expected to provide solutions to complex IE problems involving a combination of labor, space, and technological changes under multiple constraints arising from resource availability, safety and regulatory requirements. Prior experience with application of lean manufacturing principles and Six-Sigma certification are desirable. You will be expected to be the champion of the changes your IE teams recommend and to work with process teams and upper management to plan, schedule, and oversee the implementation of recommended changes. You may be tasked with developing strong KPI strategies, KPIs and metrics, developing/applying simulation models, and developing dashboards and tracking systems to improve and monitor processes. Experience with simulation models is highly desirable. Prior industry experience is also highly desirable, particularly in an environment where safety and regulatory compliance are of paramount importance.

Minimum Job Requirements:
Engineering Expertise: Demonstrated knowledge and proven experience in engineering science and technology, including applying principles, techniques, procedures and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services
Project Management: Demonstrated experience designing, planning, and executing manufacturing and characterization projects and strong experience in solution development and implementation
Quality Improvement: Demonstrated ability to apply logistics and quality control techniques including, but not limited to Six Sigma methodologies to address issues such as operational and quality process improvement. Helps in developing a Six Sigma lean organization, driven to improve performance, cost, throughput and quality control metrics.
Communication Skills: Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing with diverse employees and organizations at all levels. Having strong interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to work and influence cross- functionally
R&D Engineer 2 Education and Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
R&D Engineer 3 Education and Experience: Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
Demonstrated knowledge or experience working in a manufacturing or production organization requiring implementation of defined manufacturing, testing and quality requirements.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with system and subsystem qualification testing and/or analysis.
Demonstrated knowledge of Conduct of Operations in a nuclear or radiological facility.
Existing DOE “Q” clearance (or similar).
Expertise and experience in systems engineering, statistical process control (SPC), and lean six sigma processes
