Los Alamos National Laboratory Industrial Engineer (R&D Engineer 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
Exciting opportunities currently exist in the Associate Directorate for Plutonium Science and Manufacturing (ADPSM). This R&D; Engineer 2 will initiate and conduct continuous improvement initiatives based upon Lean Sigma principles in collaboration with the operational teams in the Detonator Production Division. Primary work scope will be in support of the High Explosive Detonator Fabrication (DET-1), Inert Component Fabrication Group (DET-2), and the Detonator Operations (DET-3) teams responsible for the fabrication, inspection, and testing of War Reserve experimental detonator components and subcomponents. The selected candidate will be expected to develop solutions to complex problems, improve production cycle times, and maximize production yield rates utilizing using the Lean Sigma principles and best practices.
Work will be accomplished without considerable direction and the candidate will be expected to support the Lean Sigma activities across theDetonator Production Divisionto ensure they are effective.
Be a continuous improvement advocate and should be capable of coaching, and mentoring all levels of the Detonator Production Division on lean sigma principles into their day to day activities.
Provides guidance to team members and management on operational, safety, and security issues with a focus on opportunities for improvement.
Cultivate a culture of continuous improvement across all levels of the organization on the benefits of Lean Sigma and support the necessary framework and tool deployment to create institutional engagement.
Actively participate is in continuous improvement activities, creation/application of the tools, and identifying the educational curriculum needs.
Facilitate Lean Sigma events/meetings to eliminate waste; time, labor hours, money, materials, equipment utilization and other resources that do not generate value.
Be a visible resource (and an active listener) to the production teams working collaboratively on defining continuous improvement opportunities/systems to improve operational, safety, quality and security initiatives.
Be a stakeholder in setting the longer term strategic direction of the continuous improvement initiatives.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Five or more years of work experience in an engineering discipline, such as mechanical engineering, metallurgy, materials science, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, chemical engineering, or nuclear engineering
Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership on project execution, characterizing process variables, utilization of Lean Sigma tools/processes and tracking of performance to goal.
Demonstrated extensive data analytical skills and proven competence in anticipating, identifying, researching, and resolving complex issues.
Proven experience applying engineering principles, methods, and tools to complex problems
Provide project management leadership on continuous improvement project teams which could include facilitation of team meetings, project communications, creation of visible metrics and tracking project status
Track record of fostering and creating a culture of continuous improvement across all levels of the organization. Including buildingtrust and fostering collaboration and teamwork.
Working proficiency with direct or parametric engineering modeling software (e.g., CREO, SolidWorks, ANSYS, AutoCAD)
Proven interpersonal skills including negotiating, influencing, conflict resolution, consensus building, oral presentations, and written communication.
Demonstrated excellence in communication skills including oral presentations and report writing.
Demonstrated experience in collaborative problem solving, coaching & mentoring and promoting teamwork.
Six Sigma Green Belt Certification with a Black Belt Certification preferred
Knowledge of the United States nuclear weapons programs, designs, and engineering
Working knowledge of governmental or commercial quality assurance standards
Experience with component or product analyses or inspections
Experience working in a team environment as demonstrated by successful implementation of deliverables such as work instructions or standard operating procedures, user training, and production
Demonstrated record of production excellence through the successful implementation of engineering designs or processes without escapes in safety, security, or quality
Active or reinstatable Department of Energy “Q” clearance
Education:This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline from an ABET accredited college or university program, such as mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, metallurgy, materials science, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, or nuclear engineering.
