What You Will Do
The High Explosives Science and Technology (Q-5) Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) seeks exemplary candidates to advance our capabilities for advanced manufacturing of energetic materials. The selected candidate will be integrated into a multidisciplinary team centered on additive manufacturing processes for explosives applications, and will be expected to participate in other research and development activities that broaden the experience of the candidate. The team seeks to advance technical methods for producing energetic materials, and advance the understanding of phenomena that arise in structure property relationships of these newly developed materials.
The tasks for this position include, but are not limited to:
Direct write additive manufacturing of highly loaded suspensions.
Small-scale detonation experiments with diagnostics ranging from high-speed imaging, PDV or other pertinent techniques for explosives performance measurement.
Formulation of energetic materials from small <2g to large >500g quantities.
Development and integration of new techniques and instrumentation to increase experimental throughput and scale up production methods.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Have a demonstrated record in one or more of the following:
Design, construction and integration of custom instrumentation.
Developing hardware control systems combining process control, real time feedback, and data acquisition.
Knowledge of Energetic Materials, specifically High Explosives, with an emphasis on fast characterization techniques (imaging, PDV, etc).
Computer application development (programming) focused on the integration of multiple instrumentation systems.
Have experience programming in an engineering language (Python, Matlab, Labview, etc…).
Communication and Teamwork
A strong record of effective communication skills, demonstrated through presentation and publication of research and the ability to communicate experimental techniques or procedures to co-workers.The ability to work across large interdisciplinary teams to meet time-sensitive goals for multiple programs and project leaders.
Be able to carry through an experiment from sample generation, diagnostic insertion, destructive dynamic testing, and data analysis and presentation.
Willing to work with High Explosives, requiring an attention to detail in safety, communication, and material handling and control.
Education/Experience : PhD from an accredited university in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, or related field. The selected applicant must have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of the appointment and be within five years of completion of the Ph.D.
Computer/Hardware integration and programming literacy with competency in basic circuit design and hygienic wiring.
Experience programming algorithms for analyzing large data sets and producing data in a graphical format to clearly convey information (MatLab, Igor, Origin, etc…).
Experience with metered flow processes or processing of high viscosity non-Newtonian fluids where feedstock rheological properties might vary or be time dependent.
