Los Alamos National Laboratory Health and Safety Tec 3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Reporting to the Occupational Safety and Health – Industrial Safety and Hygiene (OSH-ISH) Industrial Hygiene Team Leader, the Health and Safety (H&S) Tech 3 will be responsible for supporting various programs including the Industrial Hygiene Equipment Room, Respiratory Protection, and other duties as assigned. The OSH-ISH group is a key component of the OSH Division, within the ESHQSS Associate Level Directorate.

This role will be specific to managing the day-to-day activities of our Industrial Hygiene Equipment Room. Tasks will include, but are not limited to, maintaining equipment inventory, equipment calibration, sample media inventory, and the development of Industrial Hygiene Equipment Guides (IHEG’s). This role may also require support to the respiratory protection team on an as needed basis to assist with fit testing, inventory, and/or other administrative needs. You may also be asked to provide support to other various Industrial Hygiene and Safety programs. The successful candidate will be required to complete and maintain training and qualification coursework.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Ability to provide precise and timely recordkeeping, written documentation processing, and deliverable execution.

  • Ability to comprehend technical and regulatory documents as they pertain to health and safety.

  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regula ti ons, policies, and procedures pertaining to industrial hygiene and safety, including 29 CFR 1910, 1926, and ACGIH TLV’s

  • Experience working with health and safety instrumenta ti on.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop, modify, and implement/follow technical procedures.

  • Ability to work independently and as team member with minimal supervision.

  • Demonstrated oral and wri tt en communica ti ons skills.

  • Working knowledge of and experience with industrial hygiene/safety risk assessments and correc ti ve ac ti ons.

  • Experience with personal computers (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, security, quality, and customer service.

  • Ability to regularly li ft 35 pounds.

  • Applicant must have the ability to obtain a Q, which normally requires U.S. ci ti zenship.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with Industrial Hygiene equipment and sample media.

  • Training

  • Procurement

  • Experience iden ti fying, applying, and interpre ti ng federal codes, standards, and regula ti ons in several IH & Safety program areas.

  • Experience supporting a technical operation consisting of a large (>2000 individuals) clientele.

Education/Experience :

Position requires a High School Diploma and 2-4 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Technical institute graduate or associate's degree may be preferred.

Note to Applicants:

Occasional travel to, and work in, other government and private facilities may be required.

The H&S Tech 3 will perform work in an office setting as well as possibly in an outdoor environment to verify correct usage of the IH equipment, while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.


New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
