What You Will Do

The Accelerator Operations and Technology (AOT) Division provides leadership in the Laboratory’s core capability of Accelerators and Electrodynamics. Accelerators and Electrodynamics enables charged particle acceleration through controlled utilization of electromagnetic fields, supporting National Security missions involving radiographic imaging, remote measurements of electromagnetic signatures, and development of new capabilities. In particular, AOT operates the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) User Facility (LUF), and conducts applied research and development in accelerator-focused technologies as they apply to National Security Science programs, and future accelerator missions. The Instrumentation and Controls Group (AOT-IC) within AOT performs a number of technical functions in support of AOT Division goals.

As a member of AOT-IC, the successful applicant for this position will be expected to work as a member of the Hardware Team whose primary responsibility is to support the operation of the LUF. The successful applicant will be expected to use Computer-Aided Design (CAD) equipment to produce unique drawings/layouts of components, facilities and/or systems. They will generate complete design packages for complex components, facilities and/or systems. They will use industry codes, standards and work with customer to develop specifications, to prepare work plans, drawings, and layouts. They will work with engineering teams to ensure drawing quality. They may be requested to develop non-routine CAD drawings and design modules. They will apply engineering design principles to design and fabricate components and assemblies. The successful candidate must communicate effectively and work independently with a minimum of supervision and as part of a team with the ability to assume responsibility for projects and their success.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Work as part of the Hardware design team in support of maintaining and upgrading the LUF.

  • Prepare quality CAD drawings that are in compliance with LANL Standards

  • Demonstrate ability to create and modify schematic drawings using Mentor Graphics Design Capture or DX Designer software.

  • Demonstrate ability to create and modify printed circuit board designs using Mentor Graphics Expedition PCB software.

  • Interface with clients, other designers and engineers to aid in the development of creative, cost effective solutions to system implementation requirements.

  • Interface and coordinate with other disciplines during design and fabrication activities.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and successfully complete multiple projects with conflicting and often changing priorities and deadlines.

  • Demonstrate uses and applications of technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques in the completion of complex work assignments.

  • Estimate design time and drawing package costs.

  • Demonstrate pro-active approach to safe work practices and the ability to manage work safely with demanding customers and hard deadlines.

Desired Skills:

  • Demonstrated operations and maintenance experience at an accelerator or similar large scientific facility.

  • Applies proficient knowledge of engineering materials and their suitability for component fabrication. Makes materials decisions of design packages.

Education: Typical educational requirement is a high school diploma and six to ten years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
