What You Will Do
The Foundry and Solidification Science Team in Sigma Division is seeking a foundry technician for performance of a wide variety of “shop floor” duties. The successful candidate will perform all hands-on duties related to charge sectioning, mold setup, casting de-molding, chemical sampling, and material inventory. Additionally, they will perform a broader set of equipment maintenance tasks when required. While many responsibilities are shared among projects on a day-to-day basis, the diversity of products and processes in the Sigma foundry requires the technician be able to apply their accumulated experience to the next job at hand. Most tasks involve hands-on work in a radiological controlled area, which makes careful work practices and actively seeking out answers to questions both top priorities. They will work with relatively complex equipment, which requires a sense of ownership to maintain in proper working order. Another requirement is the adherence to conduct of operations and maintaining a safe and secure workplace while meeting mission deliverables. Training will be required for LANL radiological work and conduct of operations regardless of prior experience.
Common tasks for this job include:
Mold assembly according to engineering drawings
Cleaning and spray coating of mold components
Sizing of charge materials and castings by sawing, shearing, breaking, and other means.
Melting equipment operation
Large-equipment repair and maintenance including vacuum systems, water lines, high power systems, and hydraulic/pneumatic system.
Casting de-molding and preparation.
Handling, packaging, and compaction of radiological products or radiological waste.
Installation of new equipment and removal of legacy units.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Metal foundry or foundry-related work experience.
Demonstrated experience with industrial equipment operation or repair such as furnaces, vacuum systems, and hydraulics.
Metal sizing experience cutting, breaking, and shearing of metal materials.
The ability to perform hands-on labor in a radiological controlled area or contamination area.
Experience working with induction and/or arc furnaces
Experience working with radiological materials.
Experience working with reactive, hazardous, and high-value materials.
Proficient crane and/or forklift operator.
Demonstrated ability to apply previous work to new, but related job tasks.
Education/Experience : Position requires an Associate's Degree and 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation):The ability to lift 30+ pounds.
Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
