What You Will Do
The Deformation Processing Team is seeking a technician to join our Team in support of a wide variety of metals forming projects. The successful candidate will be able to work on both independent projects and as part of a team on various metal forming or heat treating tasks. This role will include hands-on work including deep drawing, forging, rolling, wire drawing & swaging, and heat treating of metals and alloys. Previous experience in one of the above areas is strongly desired, but is not required.
Common tasks for this job include:
Research Tec 3 ($52,200-$80,800)
Operation of vacuum heat treatment furnace systems following LANL procedures.
Operation of rolling mills for both hot and cold rolling of metals.
Setup and operation of hydraulic presses for deep drawing or forging.
Routine maintenance of furnaces, vacuum systems, water lines, and hydraulic systems.
Maintaining supplies for the equipment in these areas.
Hands-on work in a radiological controlled area.
Reporting results from forming trials and documenting routine operations.
Research Tec 4 ($62,800-$99,800)
In addition to the duties outlined above, the ( Research Technician 4) will be required to:
Provide expert advice and consultation to customers, management, and vendors.
Lead and integrate team activities into overall plan to support the overall project requirements.
Develop and maintain procedures in support of safe, and compliant, operations.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Hands-on experience in metalworking or other fabrication skills
Working knowledge of Microsoft programs, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
Experience reading technical drawings and specifications
Self-starter with a commitment to organization and task preparation

In addition to these requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Ability to independently manage work tasks and meet customer timelines with a minimum of supervision
Education/Experience at Technician Level 3: Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree and a three-to-five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Education/Experience at Technician Level 3 : Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree and a three-to-five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Education/Experience at Technician Level 4: Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree and a four-to-six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience in deep drawing, forging, rolling, wire drawing & swaging, and/or heat treating of metals and alloys and/or other fabrication experience
Experience with computer control systems on fabrication equipment
Experience working with radiological materials or non-typical metal systems such as tantalum
Record of working as a member of small teams to accomplish tasks safely and efficiently
Demonstrated attention to detail and careful work practices around industrial hazards
Proficient forklift and/or crane operator

Where You Will Work
This position will be filled at either the Research Technician 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Our Division is the focal point for metals research, processing development, and metallurgical applications at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Capabilities within the Deformation Processing Team include rolling mills, hydraulic presses, vacuum heat treating furnaces, and laser powder bed metal additive manufacturing machines. We support a wide variety of programs with an emphasis on identifying creative solutions to meet customer needs.
Many tasks involve hands-on work in a radiological controlled area that demands careful work practices and a strong safety culture. Technicians in the forming shop will work with several types of equipment, which requires a sense of ownership to maintain in proper working order. New processes in the forming area will require the technician be able to apply experience-based judgement to safely preform new jobs. Due to the nature of the work, maintaining conduct of operations and keeping a safe and secure workplace are essential to meeting customer deliverables. Training will be required for LANL radiological work and conduct of operations regardless of prior experience
