Los Alamos National Laboratory Fire Protection Engineering Technologist (Engineering Technologist 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Engineering Technologist 2 (ENG TECH 2) position within the Engineering Project Delivery Group of ES-DO will work with a team of engineering professionals responsible primarily for LANL facility and site design and analysis work and review of LANL construction projects to ensure compliance with LANL and nationally recognized codes and standards. The ES-EPD core design group provides institutional leadership, processes, and technical resources for sate, high quality, and cost-effective engineering, construction and operational configuration management in support of LANL operations. The primary focus of this position is to assist in the analysis, design and modification of fire protection systems including both alarm and suppression systems. Specific duties include providing fire protection engineering/technical input on design projects, system/equipment design, and maintenance and operational technical support. Additional responsibilities include assistance with the analysis of fire system/equipment problems and troubleshooting equipment failures and operational deficiencies, retrofit of fire protection systems within existing facilities, definition of system design and safety envelope requirements, and review of proposed facility modifications for maintainability, operability, and conformance to facility operational and safety requirements including codes and standards.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated technical experience in design, installation and maintenance of fire suppression systems

  • Demonstrated experience as a fire protection technologist at a major commercial, industrial, or nuclear facility with a good background in fire suppression and fire alarm system design.

  • Demonstrated capability in the design and maintenance of automatic sprinkler, specialty suppression/extinguishing systems, and fire detection and alarm systems.

  • Demonstrated capability in trouble shooting fire protection systems.

  • Demonstrated capability in application of codes and standards in a highly regulated work environment, such as National Fire Protection Code (NFPA), International Building Code (IBC), and International Existing Building Code (IEBC).

  • Demonstrated ability to work within a team, and effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and written within the team and with peers and craft personnel.

  • Ability to manage a single task/and or assist in managing multiple tasks requiring varying resource providing fire protection technical expertise on design projects, system/equipment design, and maintenance and operational technical support.

  • Current NICET Level II certification in either Fire Alarm Systems or Inspection & Testing of Fire Alarm Systems. (Other NICET certifications may be considered if they are directly applicable)

  • Demonstrated proficiency using the following software packages: AutoCad 2014 and SprinkCad

Education: Associates degree in Engineering/engineering technology and 5 years of related experience or a minimum of at least 7-9 years of related work experience.

  • This position requires a Q access authorization. Applicants must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance, which normally requires U. S. citizenship.
