Los Alamos National Laboratory Field Engineer (R&D Engineer 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Mechanical R&D Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division, Dynamic Structure Design, Engineering, and Vessel Operations (J-2) Group is looking for an R&D Field Engineer 2/3 to support the Subcritical Experiment Mission at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). The Mechanical Field R&D Engineer 2/3 will be stationed in New Mexico and perform activities in support of Subcritical Experiment Mission at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). This position requires frequent travel to NNSS.

R&D Engineer 2 ($91,800-$151,400)

As an R&D Engineer 2, you will work with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, technologists, and technicians on projects and programs for both internal and external customers. You will work on design and development of confinement vessel configurations to support execution of dynamic high explosive related experiments for the LANL Weapons program as well as other national security customers.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Interfacing and integrating with the various design and operational teams within J-2, and other groups at LANL, LLNL, and MSTS to ensure requirements meet design specification and programmatic needs for the vessel design, fabrication/procurement, assembly, and fielding

  • Travel to Nevada to oversee vessel operations, interact with on-site fabricators, and work within the Operational envelope of J Division’s Nevada (J-NV) Operations group

R&D Engineer 3 ($110,400-$186,300)

As an R&D Engineer 3, you will be expected to perform all the duties of an R&D Engineer 2. Additionally, you will be expected to develop solutions to complex problems, oversee, and communicate expertise in vessel configuration projects. Work will be accomplished by working on a team, identifying and implementing emerging technologies, and/or developing technical approaches.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

R&D Engineer 2:

Engineering: Strong background in the fundamentals of mechanical engineering, including experience in design, planning, fabrications, and executing research and development projects, development of test plans.

Design: Working knowledge and experience in design drafting practices, geometric tolerance, and development of engineering specifications. CAD experience with design packages such as CREO or Solid Works

Field Operations: Experience supporting field operations, and working with fabrication shops and vendors to source materials and components.

Metrology/Computational Tools: Experience with ASME Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and tolerance stack. Familiarity with Finite Element Analysis (FEA).

Communication Skills: Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and present technical issues, both verbally and in written form, to an audience with various technical backgrounds, as well as experience providing technical direction, mentoring and coordinating/monitoring the work of others.

In addition to the R&D Field Engineer 2 requirements, the R&D 3 Engineer must have the following:

Technical Knowledge: Experience in design, analysis, and testing of statically or dynamically loaded structures, systems, and components.

Field Experience/Project Management: Experience managing field operations, and managing contracts with fabrication shops and vendors to source materials and components.

Engineering Specifications: Demonstrated experience in developing engineering specifications (such as, design specification, fabrication and inspection specifications, assembly specifications, test plans, etc.).

Quality Standards: Experience in use and application of consensus standards (such as, ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII, Divisions 1, 2, and 3, API 579 Fitness for Service Code, AWS Welding Code, AISC and AISI Steel Codes, ASM International Materials Code, etc.).

R&D Engineer 2 Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Focus on Mechanical and/or Structural Engineering is preferred.

R&D Engineer 3 Education/Experience: Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred. Focus on Mechanical and/or Structural Engineering preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Setup and execution of dynamic experiments.

  • Experience with ASME B&PV Section VIII, Divisions 1, 2, and 3

  • Experience with ASME B&PV Section VIII, Division 3, Code Case 2564

  • Experience with API 579

  • Experience with AWS Welding Code

  • Knowledge of non-destructive inspection techniques (e.g., helium leak testing, ultrasonic testing, dye penetrant testing, magnetic particle testing, etc.)

Nuclear Operations:

Demonstrated knowledge operating under Device Safety Analyses and Technical Surveillance Requirements.
