Los Alamos National Laboratory Field Engineer 2/3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Job Title Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Contribute to a dynamic team of facility engineering professionals that provide engineering solutions across a wide variety of buildings at one of the most important research facilities in the world. Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for an enthusiastic field engineers with an interest in building systems and infrastructure to work in the Engineering Services. This posting is for a Civil Field Engineer to also serve as LANL’s POC for AASHTO Accreditation.

Engineer 2 $94,100—$155,700

The Field Engineer is responsible for ensuring that the technical aspects of construction and maintenance projects are in full conformance with approved contractual documents by monitoring facility maintenance and construction activities. This is accomplished by ensuring that baseline documents are accurate, design documents are adhered to, and as-built configurations are verified. Field Engineers expedite project execution through identifying issues, coordinating technical solutions, and providing timely guidance through approved policies and procedures.

Engineer 3 $103,500—$172,800

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will be considered a Senior Field Engineer. Accordingly, you will be expected to lead all activities associated at the Engineer 2 level. In addition, you may serve as a team lead responsible for the mentoring of junior staff; be assigned moderate to complex assignments; be able to work independently and as part of the a team; and utilize engineering technology to accomplish work and continuously improve work processes to meet customer needs.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Fundamental knowledge of engineering and construction techniques, including work planning and control methods, applications of engineering and construction methods, and application of technology and tools to conventional facility operation and construction operations; facility maintenance and installation techniques; and operations and standard recommended practice for establishing and implementing a quality management system for construction materials testing laboratories

  • Experienced in interpreting design drawings and specifications; Preparing field material purchase requisitions through material take-off, including estimating the quantities and assuring compliance with design specifications and drawings; Preparing Field Change Requests. Experienced in reviewing Work Packages and Work Instructions for completeness; Inspecting construction work for compliance, including performing witness testing accordance with drawings, specifications, national codes and standards, and policies and procedures

  • Proven ability to effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and craft personnel.

  • Professional Engineering License in the Civil discipline.

Additional Job Requirements for Engineer 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Independently lead all activities and demonstrate advanced to expert experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities referenced in the lower level requirements.

  • A Subject Matter Expert in one or more of the responsibilities referenced in the lower level requirements in order to provide formal mentoring.

  • Previous experience as an AASHTO Accreditation Engineer

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years of practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to oversee, develop, and/or enforce adherence LANL’s Material Testing Lab American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Accreditation.

  • Knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principals and procedures.

  • Awareness of industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular construction discipline.

Note to Applicants:

Technical writing sample: With your application, provide a one paragraph sample of technical writing describing the challenges Field Engineers may face when working within a large construction project.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
