Los Alamos National Laboratory Explosives Technician 3/4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Explosives Technician 3 or Explosives Technician 4level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The High Explosives (HE) Fabrication and Disposition Group (M-8) in the Dynamic Experiments (M) Division is seeking a qualified HE Technician that will support many HE operations including HE pressing, HE transporting, HE inventory, HE inspection, HE waste disposal operations, other general HE tasks and/or maintenance of equipment to support the overall success of the group. The HE technician will be required to obtain a diverse skillset and have the willingness to support multiple HE operations within the group.

The selected candidate will work in a team environment to provide HE technician services for a variety of customers both internal and external to the Laboratory.

Explosives Technician 3 | $53,500 - $82,800

Now is an excellent time to join the group as major investments are being made in acquiring additional equipment supporting HE operations. The successful candidate will work under the direction of a senior HE technician supporting various HE fabrication and disposition activities. As the only HE pressing, machining and inspection facility at LANL, this technician will support multiple HE operations to enable the group’s mission.

Explosives Technician 4 | $64,400 - $102,300

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the explosives technician 4 will be a subject matter expert in at least two of the HE technician roles outlined above and work with minimal supervision to perform the tasks.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience maintaining infrastructure, e.g. inventory, supply procurement, orderliness, cleanliness, organization, inspection records, and material logs.

  • Demonstrated experience following procedures, requirements, and regulations (HE safety)

  • Demonstrated experience working independently and in a team environment to complete tasks, meet deadlines, and perform work to defined procedures

  • Proficiency with basic computer programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel

  • Demonstrated record of dependability, reliability, and commitment to long-term needs of the job duties and programmatic goals of the organization.

In addition to the Job Requirements outline above, qualification at the Explosives Technician 4 level requires

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and effective interpersonal skills with a strong ability to interact with all levels of staff and management.

  • Demonstrated experience working with hazardous materials, including appropriate qualifications (ex: LANL HE Handler)

  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude in support of equipment operation and maintenance

  • Demonstrated experience training co-workers and leading group initiatives

Desired Qualifications:

  • A working knowledge of DOE Standard 1212 ( formerly the DOE explosives safety manual)

  • LANL HE Handler training/certificate and LANL HE Transporter training/certificate

  • Fork Lift training/certificate

  • Crane Operator training/certificate

  • Demonstrated experience performing basic equipment troubleshooting and repair.

Explosive Tec 3 Education Required: Requires an Associate’s Degree in a relevant field and a minimum of 3 years of experience in the common mechanical, electronic, and optical techniques used in explosive testing; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Explosive Tec 4 Education Required: Requires an Associate’s Degree in a relevant field and a minimum 5 years of experience in the common mechanical, electronic, and optical techniques used in explosive testing; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, additional training and/or certification may be expected.
