Los Alamos National Laboratory Ergonomic Technician 3 (Health and Safety Tec 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Deployed Services Team is part of the Occupational Safety and Health Division, whose mission is focused on enabling worker health through injury prevention and maintaining regulatory compliance in support of the overall laboratory mission. The Ergonomic Technician, as a member of the Industrial Safety and Health Deployed Services (OSH-DS) Ergonomics Team, will provide office ergonomic services to employees within the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Business Management (ALDBUS) organization.

The primary core tasks of the Ergonomic Technician will be to conduct office evaluations in a variety of settings including standard offices, collaboration spaces, control rooms, reception areas and to provide recommendations for ergonomic improvements and optimization. This individual will identify and reduceMusculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) caused by job-related risk factors by performing ergonomic evaluations and provide recommendations and solutions in office environments. In addition, the position will also involve collaboration with other deployed ALDBUS ergonomics staff to provide regular reports of ergonomic support services rendered to ALDBUS management and the OSH Ergonomics Program Lead. The Ergonomic Technician will perform monthly inventory reviews of the Ergo Store equipment, including: distribution of equipment, tracking inventory levels and forecasting budget needs to refill the inventory. The selected candidate will be expected to be familiar with the contents of the Office Ergonomic Demonstration and Resource Room that provides ergonomic furniture to employees, the Ergo Store that provides ergonomic equipment to employees and the At Risk Furniture Program that provides on the spot furniture to symptomatic employees. The position will also require giving presentations on safety and ergonomics to LANL employees.

As the selected candidate, you will be responsible for working with customer management and the OSH Ergonomics Program Lead to identify current and emerging ergonomic issues that impact segments of the LANL workforce, track injury trends, prepare for upcoming regulatory changes, and anticipate ergonomic issues associated with new jobs and activities.

This position is required to promote safety, security, and quality in all operations; promote teamwork within and across the Laboratory; collaborate with other members of the Industrial Safety & Hygiene Group, Deployed Services Group and Occupational Health Group to promote a positive work environment while delivering exceptional customer service

Knowledge of and experience with patient advocacy and occupational health issues including protection of patient health information.


Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills while interacting effectively with people throughout the varying levels of hierarchy. Experience providing educational presentations and training related to ergonomics or health related scientific research and its practical application to a diverse audience.

Collaboration & Teamwork

Ability to work both independently and with a team. Experience interacting with all levels of internal and external personnel.

Customer Service

Experience promoting and cultivating an atmosphere of excellent customer‐service that is responsive to internal and external customer’s needs and achieve a high level of customer satisfaction. Demonstrated ability to respond to customer requests and provide timely responses while delivering professional service.


Demonstrated ability to effectively organize, prioritize, and follow-through to completion on multiple tasks, often under strict deadlines, frequent interruptions, and changing priorities. Strong organizational skills across multiple projects simultaneously. Demonstrated skill in the preparation and presentation of reports and deliverables.

Managing Projects

Experience managing multiple concurrent projects and work activities, by working both independently and with a team. Experience interacting with all levels of internal and external personnel. Ability to serve as subject matter expert and manage Ergo Store. Ability to improve processes programs and efficiencies.

Computer Systems

Experience using Microsoft Suite, Adobe and other business type applications in support of the assigned organization. Knowledge of and experience using the Facility Service Request and Content Management Systems.


This position requires a minimum of a High School Diploma and 2-4 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Technical institute graduate or associates degree may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

Ergonomics certification such as those provided by the Board of Certification in Professional Ergonomics (AEP, CPE, CEAS), Certified Ergonomic Assessment Specialist, Oxford Research Institute (CIE, CAE) or similar.

Education : Bachelor’s degree or greater in ergonomics, public health, occupational safety, physical therapy, kinesiology, occupational therapy, industrial engineering, sports science or related fields from an accredited university preferred.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
