Los Alamos National Laboratory Engineering Technologist 1 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The successful candidate will work on the PF-Production Control Team to provide the manufacturing control functions for classified, unclassified and hazardous material fabrications for the Mark Quality Manufacturing Center (MQMC) and the PF-Manufacturing (PF-MFG) Group. This position will require you to work independently, as well as in a team setting to provide production control and liaison support to the Prototype Fabrication Division and the PF customers. This will include ensuring requirements for part fabrication, welding, inspection, quality requirements, material requests, special requirements (classified, unclassified, hazardous, etc.), and promise (due) dates are well defined and understood. The candidate’s responsibilities will include but are not limited to, cost estimating, entering and scheduling jobs into JobBOSS, creating travelers, and coordinating job close out and lesson learned reviews. The candidate will work with shop supervisors, quality assurance (QA), designated procurement representative (DPR), machinists, welders, inspectors, engineers, programmers, JobBOSS Coordinators, project controls personnel, and management to review jobs to ensure materials and labor can be completed to meet customer's request dates.

The candidate will assist in scheduling and parts status tracking that will help PF meet customer scheduled milestones; create and review job orders in JobBOSS; create travelers and routers; distribute jobs to shop supervisors and inspection leads; track parts on the shop floor; update part status and the associated schedule; and other requested assistance. The candidate will also provide support to Laboratory customers for the Rapid Release Blanket (RRB), which requires working with vendor machine shops located in Los Alamos and Albuquerque and requires travel to the vendor shops to deliver and pick up parts. RRB work requires the candidate to become an experienced Designated Procurement Representative (DPR).

DPR duties require the candidate to be responsible for obtaining appropriate quotes and approvals, creating a requisition in iProcurement, receiving the item, delivering the item to the customer, and following all rules and regulations for the RRB program.

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to classified matter protection and control (CMPC). These responsibilities include ensuring that classified matter is accounted for and all material transactions meet LANL policies and procedures. This ensures that classified part transfers meet all Laboratory policies and procedures. The CMPC directs how classified matter and classified parts are accessed, stored, generated, marked, reproduced, received and transmitted, destroyed and accounted for based on Department of Energy orders.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Manufacturing

You must have comprehensive knowledge of manufacturing processes to include areas of machining, welding/joining, forming, and inspection/characterization where an in-depth knowledge of ISO, QC and other manufacturing standards is essential. This will require you to have a thorough knowledge of GD&T per ANSI Y 14.5 and a basic understanding of inspection techniques and principles.Knowledge of models-based engineering Computer Aided Design (CAD)/Computer Aided Model (CAM) systems.You must be willing to work with materials with hazardous characteristics in addition to common materials and alloys.

Customer Service

You will serve as a point of contact for the PF customer base. This will require you to have exceptional customer service skills and the ability to provide effective and timely status to customers and stakeholders for part fabrications. Experience interacting professionally with all types of personnel, including external interfaces. As needed, you will be required to pick up material/parts from vendors.

Organization and Time Management

You must have the ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple assignments, which will require you to possess: high attention to detail; strong organizational skills; the ability to think critically, analytically, and problem solve, and the ability to work in a dynamic and fluid working environment. You must have experience working with sensitive information, a record of dependability, availability, attendance, and punctuality.

Communication and Teaming

Demonstrated experience and excellence in interacting and communicating both written and orally with customers in a customer service-related setting. You must have a demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team setting to achieve or negotiate work requirements with peers, customers and technicians.

Business Systems

Advanced knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office, including the demonstrated ability to interpret data and information independently, and produce advanced Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, Microsoft Project, and PowerPoint presentations.

Training/Certifications

The ability to acquire and maintain pertinent certification in the following: Radiological Worker II and Beryllium awareness. You will also serve as a Classified Matter Protection and Control (CMPC) custodian with application of policies and procedures for documents and parts; and acquire Designated Procurement Representative (DPR) status, which will require you to understand and apply LANL procurement policies, and utilize iProcurement.

Clearance

The ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally required US citizenship.

Education/Experience :Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Science, Math, or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Journeyman machinist or equivalent credentials

  • Experience in creating and providing accurate estimates for time and budget requirements to meet customer specifications and requirements

  • Knowledge of conventional and advanced manufacturing techniques and capabilities.

  • Experience with materials having Rad, toxic, pyrophoric, explosive, and/or other hazardous characteristics

  • Experience with materials removal, joining, and/or forming

  • Familiarity with PF Division business systems (CPIMS, JobBOSS, Schedules, PTC PDMLink/Creo user experience).

  • An active Q clearance.
