The engineering role supports a business function that implements the framework for the disciplined execution of effective engineering at LANL through application of national consensus codes and standards, recognized quality standards, Department of Energy (DOE) Orders, Laboratory requirements, and federal, state, and local regulations. As a Cogitative Systems Engineer, you will integrate with other engineering disciplines, document control, safety basis, operations, maintenance, project management, or any other organization that needs engineering input to accomplish LANL deliverables, including but not limited to the maintenance and operations of nuclear and nonnuclear facilities. Accordingly, you must be able to work independently and as part of a team, apply broad and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in the preparation of engineering deliverables, and utilizes engineering technology to accomplish work and continuously improve work processes to meet customer needs. The positions will work at one of the following facilities (ES-55, ES-CMR, ES-CWF, ES-WFO).
The successful candidate will be expected to assist in the performance the following duties of this position in the areas of electrical, instrumentation and control, mechanical, structural/civil, or fire protection engineering. The successful candidate will be required to support configuration management of assigned systems, defining and controlling systems modification, and maintain technical baseline. Knowledge of performing root cause analysis and troubleshooting.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated knowledge/understanding of engineering concepts applicable to the person’s discipline.
Demonstrated ability to work well in teams to get projects accomplished.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbally.
Knowledge of engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to conventional facility and operations-based engineering problems.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and 0 to 2 years of practical work experience.
Demonstrated knowledge of DOE standards applicable to electrical design implementation.
Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification - or certification that the candidate has passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements
for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
