Los Alamos National Laboratory Electrical & Sofware Engineering Postdoc for Electrical Power System Modeling in Los Alamos, New Mexico

The Information Sciences and Modeling group (A-1) is looking for outstanding candidates in the field of power systems modeling, software development, and electrical engineering.

The successful candidate will support projects that focus on solving emerging and challenging problems in the areas of transmission and distribution system modeling, simulation, and analysis. The candidate is expected to work in an interdisciplinary environment with significant collaborative research and to publish in peer-reviewed journals and present their research at conferences and workshops.

This position is part of LANL’s Infrastructure Science Programs, including:

  • Advanced Network Science Initiative (ANSI): ANSI performs basic and applied research focused on modeling and understanding the nation's critical infrastructures, such as electric power and natural gas. Our expertise covers statistics, stochastic methods, machine learning, control theory, dynamical systems, discrete and continuous optimization, statistical physics, and graphical modeling. We ensure the scientific and technological validity of our approaches by working closely with physicists, engineers, mathematicians, statisticians, computer scientists, and economists through interdisciplinary collaborations.   • National Infrastructure Simulation and Analysis Center (NISAC): This is a project funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to conduct modeling, simulation, and analysis of the nation's critical infrastructure. NISAC analysts assess critical infrastructure risk, vulnerability, interdependencies, and event consequences.

  • Department of Energy: The candidate will work with LANL’s applied energy program office and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity. Programs and projects include control and optimization of networks under uncertainty, analysis of extreme events, design of resilient networks, analysis of interdependent networks, and machine learning for infrastructure systems.

  • Departments of Homeland Security and Defense: The candidate will contribute to LANL’s recent efforts to develop novel models electric power system behavior and response during extreme events such as geo-magnetic disturbances (GMD), hurricanes, and earthquakes.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Research & Collaboration

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively on team

  • Experience in modeling energy infrastructure networks; experience in multi-conductor electric distribution systems is highly preferred

  • Scientific/numerical programming experience in Julia (preferred), Python, MATLAB, C++, or Java

  • Software engineering experience

Communication

Good interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.

Desired Qualifications:

Technical Experience/Expertise

Experience or expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Experience in solving practical science and engineering problems, especially in the context of infrastructure networks

  • Background in applied mathematics disciplines such as optimization, control theory, and machine learning

  • Experience with parallel computation, containerization, and cloud computing and/or HPC environments a plus

  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q and SCI security clearances, which typically requires U.S. citizenship

Education:

A Ph.D. in a relevant science or engineering field (electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering, applied mathematics, operations research, or a related field) awarded within the last 5 years.

Additional Details

Position does not require a security clearance although one must have the ability to obtain a DOE Q and SCI security clearances. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
