Los Alamos National Laboratory Electrical Engineer (R&D Engineer 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
R&D Engineer 2 ($94,100 - $155,700)
As an R&D Engineer 2 you will become a member of Q-6 and assigned to one of six teams. You will team with other Q-6 engineers/scientists in such areas as initiation system design, performance studies and modeling, detonator & integrated system testing, implementation of new diagnostics, and design and qualification of firesets. This may be followed by a rotation to better familiarize yourself with group activities, or direct assignment to a team including leadership of a project.
You will work with other organizations to ensure programs are supported and deliverables are met. Strong documentation (writing) skills and ability to present technical information to a wide audience through formal and informal technical interactions are crucial in this role. You will work daily in a classified setting, and must demonstrate a strong commitment towards security. Domestic/Foreign travel is periodically required based on programmatic needs. The successful candidate will be self-motivated, with good communication, documentation, and teaming skills.
R&D Engineer 3 ($113,100 - $190,900)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level youwill become a member of the Q-6 and assigned to one of six teams. Once established, this will progress to leadership of a team, mentoring of fellow staff, development and leadership of an existing project, and/or program development.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated aptitude through either coursework and advanced studies, or previous experience in 1 or more of the following areas: Detonator Firing Systems (design, qualification, hardening, or troubleshooting); Software design applicable to system control; Pulse Power research, design, application; Analog Design; Development and implementation of advanced diagnostic techniques associated with detonator firing systems and detonators; Time and frequency domain acquisition (oscilloscopes, network analyzer, signal generators, spectrum analyzer, TDR) and analysis techniques; Demonstrated knowledge of LabVIEW and National Instrument hardware (primarily cRIO and sbRIO components).
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with design & analysis tools, such as simulation tools, electromagnetic design tools, schematic capture, printed circuit board layout and signal integrity analysis tools. Demonstrated experience with data analysis tools, such as Matlab and LabVIEW.
Collaboration and Communication
Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team with emphasis on self-initiative and technical leadership to develop high quality and proven solutions for customer needs.
Excellent oral, written and presentation communication skills. Demonstrated successful experience working in an integrated team environment.
Provide technical peer review, contribute ideas for new proposal and business development opportunities.
Ability to read and interpret electrical engineering design drawings and effectively apply fundamental problem analysis skills. Knowledge of, and experience with, quality requirements.
A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requ i res:
Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
Demonstrated leadership of teams executing complex tests and experiments, including formalization through published reports and presentations. Demonstrated experience mentoring students, postdocs, or junior staff.
Working interactively with line management, sponsors, and program managers to include financial tracking and responsibility.
Experience with the following:analog circuit design, high voltage switch trigger design, multipoint initiation systems, processing and analysis of experimental data sets, error analysis of diagnostics, detonator modeling, debugging & troubleshooting circuits/prototypes, high voltage safety, modeling of pulse discharge components, high voltage capacitors, and/or electromagnetic design
Experience modeling with SPICE for circuits and electromagnetic field simulation software
Experience in system miniaturization, e.g. MEMS
Experience utilizing and/or developing signal-processing techniques of dynamical systems.
Knowledge of the NNSA Enterprise design laboratory and plant interactions and operations.
Demonstrated experience in secure work environment or working with sensitive or classified information
Knowledge/experience of software quality assurance and source code configuration management practices.
Active Q clearance.
