Los Alamos National Laboratory Electrical Engineer (Engineer 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Within this job, successful candidates will have to opportunity to support the Laboratory’s mission by s erving as the subject matter expert for facility electrical engineering matters, including all aspects of electrical safety, power quality, power monitoring, and critical power reliability/redundancy issues. Often times in this role, engineers will perform engineering studies including short circuit, device coordination, equipment sizing, exterior lighting, fault current, and arc flash for both medium and low voltage equipment. Electrical Engineers in this position will work alongside junior engineers( e.g., fire protection, structural, mechanical, and electrical) and other senior engineers in team settings to complete collaborative full-system design solutions through mentoring, calculations, and leadership.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Expert knowledge of new and existing non-reactor facility electrical engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of computer-aided engineering tools to solve operations-based engineering problems.

  • Advanced knowledge of engineering work, planning, construction, and control methods.

  • Advanced knowledge of engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies. Extensive knowledge of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards and guides.

  • Advanced knowledge of industry, regulatory, or national codes and standards including IBC, NEC, IEEE, and NFPA 70E.

  • Advanced knowledge of Engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices. Advance knowledge of project and process engineering practices.

Training/Certifications: Current registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT).

Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.

This position may be subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. This DOE Order establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in the positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job. DOE 426.2 requires a BS degree, 2 years job related experience and 1 year non-reactor nuclear experience for technical support personnel who perform work independently at nuclear facilities. The Engineer 3 position would be expected to be able to obtain the nuclear experience on the job if they do not have it upon hire before becoming fully-qualified.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of DOE standards applicable to electrical design implementation.

  • Advanced knowledge in Instrumentations and Controls-related designs.

  • Familiarity with LANL engineering processes and procedures.

  • Professional Engineering certification.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Successful candidates will working with the Engineering Services (ES) Division. The ES Division of LANL develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. The Electrical Engineer position within ES Division is assigned to the Engineering Services TA-55 (ES-55) Group responsible for design services and the Conduct of Engineering (CoE) program implementation at LANL.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
