Los Alamos National Laboratory Electrical Calibration Technician (Process and Sampling Tec 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Process & Sampling Technician 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Metrology Program and Calibration Laboratory (MP&CL) has an opening in our electrical calibration laboratory where we provide high quality NIST traceable electrical calibrations for LANL organizations executing the National Security Mission. The MP&CL currently maintains National Voluntary Laboratory Program (NVLAP) accreditation in Frequency Dissemination and Stop Watches/Timers and continues to expand the scope of accreditation. Calibration technicians are responsible for performing and documenting calibrations in one or more assigned calibration areas (e.g. dimensional, electrical, and physical). This position is with the MP&CL electrical calibration lab, however; there are opportunities to provide calibration support in the dimensional and/or physical labs. The electrical calibration lab has capabilities in AC and DC voltage, current, frequency, resistance, current among other areas.

Process & Sampling Technician 2 ($48,600 - $74,700)

Perform simple to moderately complex measurement and test equipment calibrations in limited assigned area/s using established procedures. Responsible for accurately documenting calibration results. Must adhere to quality and technical procedures to ensure quality results. This position requires entry-level calibration experience.

Process & Sampling Technician 3 ($52,200 - $80,800)

The Process & Sampling Technician 3 performs a broader range of calibration (either within the area or in multiple areas) or more complex calibrations in limited areas. Provides support of accreditation, bench operability, and/or quality control efforts. Applies calibration experience to collaboratively solve calibration issues and equipment troubleshooting. This position requires advanced calibration experience.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience performing electrical calibrations in a government calibration laboratory, commercial calibration laboratory, or a company that calibrates M&TE that it owns.

  • Demonstrated familiarity of calibration concepts, requirements, and processes.

  • Experience in following administrative, quality, and technical procedures.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collective team.

Additional Job Requirements for Process & Sampling Technician (3):

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, the Process & Sampling Technician 3 position requires:

  • Advanced experience performing electrical calibrations in a laboratory environment with an ability to adjust of M&TE.

  • Advanced understanding of the major elements of a calibration.

  • Familiarity in monitoring calibration equipment/system trends to identify equipment performance issues.

  • Familiarity with measurement uncertainties, Test Uncertainty Ratios, and guard banding principles.

  • Advanced demonstrated knowledge of ISO17025 quality and technical requirements necessary to support National Voluntary Laboratory Program (NVLAP) accreditation activities.

Training/Certifications:

Education/Experience at lower level: Position typically requires a recognized degree in an engineering or scientific discipline related to metrology, or specialized courses in related engineering discipline, or American Society for Quality Certified Calibration Technician; or one year of satisfactory performance as a calibration technician, or an equivalent combination education and experience.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position typically requires a recognized degree in an engineering or scientific discipline related to metrology, or specialized courses in related engineering discipline, or American Society for Quality Certified Calibration Technician; or six years of satisfactory performance as a calibration technician, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience using MetCal

  • Ability to obtain a DOE "Q" Clearance, which normally requires U.S. Citizenship

  • Knowledge of IndySoft or other calibration-related Laboratory Information Management Systems

  • Certified Calibration Technician certification

  • Ability to occasionally travel

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
