Los Alamos National Laboratory Drug & Alcohol Test Specialist (Security Specialist 1/2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
As a vital member of the Personnel Security group, reporting to the Substance Abuse Team Leader, you will serve a vital function for the Laboratory’s Workplace Substance Abuse Program. Many of the activities at the Laboratory involve working with classified information and some specialized duties that require HRP certification in order to conduct certain types of activities. Personnel Security is one of the busiest groups at Los Alamos National Laboratory. To obtain success in this role, you must demonstrate strong attention to detail and the ability to interact professionally and proactively with other individuals, groups, and independently.
This position will be filled at either the Security Specialist 1/Security Specialist 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Security Specialist 1 $58,000 - $90,800
You will use your skillset to help workers obtain and maintain their access authorization or HRP certification from the Department of Energy by using various databases to complete the required steps. You will be part of a multi-team effort in a fast-paced environment where your attention to detail and ability to manage your time is essential.
Security Specialist 2 $71,000 - $112,700
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will assist management and peers with self-assessments and run reports for drug and alcohol testing statistics for various departments such as Legal, Human Resources, as well as Occupational Medicine. You will ensure Personnel Security is compliant in HRP/TDP/Policy/DOT and EAP within the regulatory guidance by percentage that we need to fulfil. You may act as the Substance Abuse Team Lead in the absence of the current Team Lead. You will ensure proactive daily communication within Personnel Security sub topical groups as well as external stakeholders. You will actively mentor new hires and lower level Security Specialists to help foster and promote professional development. You will assist in identifying potentially more effective methods of work operation and provide resolution and solutions to a diverse range of security challenges within your area of expertise.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Working knowledge and experience in one or more of the major security areas – information security, computer security, personnel security (Badge Office, Clearance Processing. HRP Program), security assessments.
Working knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office, Excel spreadsheets, andexperience coordinating schedules and calendar management .
Working knowledge and experience in protecting sensitive and private information.
Demonstrated experience working with high volumes of customers as both part of a team and independently; ability to interact with all levels of personnel and management.
Additional Job Requirements for Security Specialist 2 :
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Demonstrated experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternatives, and recommending solutions on problems affecting security and safeguards.
Demonstrated experience in effectively prioritizing assigned tasks and assuming responsibility for accomplishing the work.
Education/Experience at Security Specialist 1 level: Position requires an Associate’s Degree and 2 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at Security Specialist 2 level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Demonstrated organizational skills for project planning, execution, and management; demonstrated experience participating in audits and self-assessments; knowledge and experience with DOE O 472.2, Personnel Security.
Ability to effectively interface and integrate at all levels and broad knowledge of the Laboratory mission, organizations, programs, policies, and procedures; a nd/or knowledge of the Laboratory’s computer and information security policies practices, and procedures.
Active Q clearance.
Location: This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. Employee participation in the Telework Pilot may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion. Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.

While the posted salary range for this position is broad, it is highly unusual for selected applicants to be hired at the top end of the range and more common for selected candidates to grow into the full salary band over time.
As operational needs develop, this position may support swing shift and night shift operations and will require a flexible schedule. However, initially upon hire, your schedule will be within standard business hours and your availability between the hours of 7:00 AM-5:00 PM dependent on assigned schedule, will be required.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements
for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
