Los Alamos National Laboratory Dimensional Inspection Engineer (R&D Engineer 3/4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

R&D Engineer 3 ($113,100 - $190,900)

You will lead engineering R&D activities and operations in support of quality engineering. You will be expected to develop robust metroloy-related processes; Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) fixturing and tooling; CMM programs to meet quality control tolerances and requirements; make suggestions with regard to procedures, standards and equipment to facilitate work and maintain product quality; lead corrective and preventive action activities, and perform root cause analysis. You will also be expected to apply knowledge of 3-D design and modeling capabilities; identify system-integration activities within and across disciplines; lead projects and supervise the work of others; and identify and manage work process improvements to meet customer needs.

R&D Engineer 4 ($135,800 - $235,600)

In addition to the above duties, you will lead, initiate, and maintain inspection engineering activities and processes with specific metrology responsibilities in the areas of inspection process development and operations. You will be expected to develop solutions to complex problems; design and implement new technologies; improve inspection cycle times; and maximize production yield rates. Work will be expected to be accomplished without considerable direction; you can expect significant latitude in determining objectives of assignments, identifying and implementing emerging technologies, and development of technical approaches.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Knowledge:

Expert knowledge and experience with CMM programming to meet quality requirements for parts with complex features and tight tolerances.

Thorough knowledge of, and experience with, manufacturing inspection/metroloy principles including interpretation of drawings; application of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) principles; process procedure development and inspection/metrology equipment.

CMM Experience: Thorough knowledge with CMM software such as Quindos (preferred), PC-DMIS or Calypso.

Metrology Knowledge: Thorough knowledge and experience with application of data analysis principles and statistical techniques for measurement data validation via uncertainty analysis.

Inspection Engineering Knowledge: Thorough experience developing inspection and/or manufacturing processes using industry, nuclear, and regulatory standards.

In addition to having advanced knowledge of the R&D Engineer 3 requirements, the R&D Engineer 4 must have the following:

Technical Leadership in Metrology: Advanced technical knowledge and ability to provide technical leadership on various aspects of metrology (e.g. advanced metrology equipment, statistical process control, data analysis, etc.).

Qualification: DOE Order 426.2 requires a BS, 2 years of job related experience, and 1 year of nuclear experience.

Education requirements for R&D Eng. 3: Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Education requirements for R&D Eng. 4: Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • CMM Calibration: Experience in calibration of CMMs to industry standards such as AMSE (e.g., B89.4.10360) or ISO (e.g., 10360 series) standards.

  • Clearance: Active DOE Q Clearance.

  • Job-specific Technical Knowledge: Experience and knowledge of weapons design and manufacturing.

  • Job-specific Quality Standards: Experience with consensus quality standards such as ISO 9001, NQA-1, and NAP-24A.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
