Los Alamos National Laboratory Digital/Analog Low-level RF Engineer (R&D Engineer 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Accelerator Operations and Technology Division (AOT), Radio Frequency Engineering (RFE) group is seeking a Digital/Analog low-level RF engineer.

The AOT division maintains, operates, and upgrades all accelerator systems used at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) complex. These consist of two 750-keV Cockcroft-Walton-based injector systems (H+ and H– systems), a 201.25-MHz drift tube linear accelerator utilizing high-power diacrode tubes, an 805-MHz coupled cavity LINAC utilizing klystrons as the primary power source, a proton storage ring, and roughly a kilometer of beam transport lines that feed beam to the five independent research programs. The RFE group is principally responsible for all RF systems, all pulsed power, and all high-power DC power supplies used to operate magnets on the beam transport lines. Low-level RF (LLRF) control and monitoring of the various RF sources used to drive the beam is critical to the high performance and successful operation of the accelerator.

R&D Engineer 2 ($94,100 - $155,700)

The successful candidate will be a member of the Low-Level RF Team and help develop and implement RF control systems. This work involves the development and design of custom analog, digital and RF PCBs including the development of HDL or test code (Labview or Matlab) for these systems. Interaction and coordination with other engineers and technicians on the LLRF team as well as close cooperation with other accelerator systems groups (software, instrumentation and accelerator physics) is expected.

R&D Engineer 3 ($113,100 - $190,900)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the successful candidate will independently develop and direct low-level RF systems projects, provide RF controls technical guidance and support to accelerator projects and provide technical and operational guidance to Low level RF technicians and engineers in installation, integration and operation of RF control systems.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated success in design and development of analog, digital or RF printed circuit boards.

  • Demonstrated success with software development for system operation and testing.

  • Demonstrated experience with applying and demonstration of engineering design cycle principles: requirements gathering, design, and implementation, debugging, testing, and documentation.

  • Displays a record of achievement through reports, publications, intellectual property, or technical products.

  • Availability for rotating on-call, working after hours when required.

Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Demonstrated experience of leading a technical team (at least 4) of people for at least two years.

  • Authors reports and/or publications of major importance, frequently with considerable impact within the engineering/scientific community.

  • Provides leadership in identifying, promoting, and developing appropriate new Laboratory-wide technical capabilities.

  • Contributed to an organizational unit to goal setting, planning, and overall direction.

  • Serves in a consultative role to senior-level management.

Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 2 level: Position requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 3 level: Position requires a minimum of a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. A Ph.D. is preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • RF Systems design experience.

  • FPGA design experience including code development, synthesizing and simulation.

  • Analog circuit design experience.

  • High speed digital design experience.

  • Real-time system programming experience with VxWorks or RTEMS.

  • Programming experience in Tcl/Tk, C, C++, Java, Python, LabVIEW and MATLAB

  • Accelerator systems experience in particular RF systems and RF control.

  • Control system design and implementation experience using FPGAs.

  • High-speed data convertor (both analog-digital and digital-analog) design experience.

  • Experience with all aspects of project management.

  • Experience in the design and development of software radio systems.

  • Knowledge of control & data acquisition theory and instrumentation hardware

  • Signal processing system design using FPGAs.

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.

The Accelerator Operations and Technology – Radio Frequency Engineering (AOT‐RFE) Group provides expertise, support, and technical leadership in all aspects of RF engineering including gridded tube amplifiers and klystrons as well as RF control systems and RF accelerator cavities. AOT‐RFE’s primary focus is the design, and implementation of RF systems for the LANSCE User Facility. This includes participation in current and future projects. AOT’s secondary focus is to share its expertise and experience with organizations within the Laboratory as well as external partners and sponsors. Along these lines, AOT‐RFE has worked on national accelerator and global security projects utilizing its knowledge base while incorporating cutting edge technology. Additionally, the group fosters and participates in worldwide collaborations, workshops, and conferences in the interest of exploring and pushing the frontiers in RF technology.
