Los Alamos National Laboratory DevSecOps Developer (Software Developer 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Software Developer 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The Software and Applications Engineering (SAE) Division supports Los Alamos National Laboratory’s (LANL) enterprise application and performs software application development support, database development and administration, software quality management, and enterprise application consulting. The Enterprise Business Software Group (SAE-2 provides custom development, commercial off the shelf application implementation, database administration, and adoption/integration with Software as a Service solutions. The selected candidate will be a crucial part of the effort to develop and implement the group’s DevSecOps project. These will revolve around implementing automated testing, CI and CD pipelines and strategies.
Software Developer 2 ($77,300.00 - $126,000.00)
You will work with a team using agile development methologies to support existing automation as well as setting up integration and automation for new projects and development within the group. You will build, test and maintain the infrastructure, tools, and scripts to allow for the speedy development and automated release of software. You will be responsible to oversee and standatize DevSecOp practice and automation across the group. This is a technical role which also requires direct communications with various functional customers and technical peers. The successful candidate should also have a strong desire to learn new technologies, business processes, to become an expert in their field, and the willingness and confidence to develop safety-class, mission-critical software.
Software Developer 3 ($94,100-$155,700)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will provide mentoring to junior staff members. We are looking for someone who self-initiates work with limited supervision, use independent judgment for determining courses of action to accomplish objectives, and uses a broad range of advanced technical skills to solve complex technical issues. At this level, on-call responsibilities along with after-hours production work on the existing systems are expected.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Knowledge of the DevSecOps culture and principles, understanding phases of a development lifecycle. Knowledge and understanding of container-orchestration systems such as Kurbenetes or Docker. Experience with Object Oriented Programming (OOP) , specifically Java, Ruby, Perl, Phyton and with one or more server side scripting languages such as bash. Demonstrate Experience reading and writing SQL and/or PLSQL queries. Experience with distributed version control systems like Git.
Experience using agile practices and priciples and experience utilizing Scrum or Kanban framework. Experience utilizing tools such as Jira/Confluence.
Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills to handle communication with technical and non-technical peers, customers, and stakeholders. Strong teamwork and communication skills.
Applicants must have the ability to obtain and maintain DOE clearances, which normally requires US citizenship.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position typically requires a relevant bachelor's degree and a minimum of five years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Job Requirements for Software Developer 3:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Experience consuming and authoring RESTfull and SOAP web services. Demonstrated experience designing and developing automation and integration solutions from the ground up. Experience with automated testing tools such as Eggplant, Cypress, utPLSQL, etc. Experience with application design utilizing design patterns.
Solving unique integration, automation, and container-orchestration systems problems by using analytic ability and innovative thinking to meet budget, timetables, and objectives. Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions to problems. Strong teamwork and communication skills.
Ability to work independently with a minimal direction and/or serve as a Technical Lead on projects and coordinate technical activities of project personnel. Excellent wring and verbal communication skills with the ability to negotiate and use proper judgment in order to resolve conflicts, solve problems, increase efficiency, and improve services and products with minimal management help. Demonstrate experience and wiliness to provide technical mentorship to junior staff members.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum eight years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.
Experience with MEAN/MERN stack, React.js.
Experience with Oracle E-Business Suite, Oracle databases (version 12c or higher), and APEX.
Experience with using cloud web services such as AWS provider, Google Cloud.

Location: This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. The Telework Pilot is in effect from Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2021, but may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion. Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
