What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Engineer 4 or 5 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Contribute to a dynamic team of professionals that provide engineering solutions across a wide variety of buildings at one of the most important research facilities in the world. Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for Senior-level Designer/Drafters to join our Engineering Services- Engineering Project Delivery group.

Working as part of a growing, fast-paced team, the successful candidate will be responsible for creating detailed three-dimensional and two-dimensional facility designs for Los Alamos National Laboratory engineering projects.

This posting is for two Design Drafter positions to serve under the ES-EPD Design Engineering teams with a focus in one or more of the following disciplines: Electrical, Instrumentation and Controls, Mechanical, Pressure Safety, Welding, Fire Protection, Civil, Structural, and Architectural.

Designer Drafter 4 ($64,400—$102,300)

Apply your Expert experience and skills to use 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce models, drawings, layouts and engineering concepts. As such, you will generate complete design packages for complex components, assemblies, facilities, equipment and/or systems. In doing so, you will independently define modeling structure for large, complex design projects and resolve design package issues by facilitating design reviews, collaborating with engineers and stakeholders on hardware design, fabrication, assembly and testing.

Regular functions include but are not limited to; Visits to facilities to evaluate existing conditions; identifying and documenting existing deficiencies; producing calculations and design recommendations; develop initial design solutions for new facilities, additions, renovations and repairs for Engineer review and approval. Lastly, you will be expected to lead, train and mentor junior designers.

Designer Drafter 5 ($77,300—$126,000)

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires the successfully candidate to independently lead all activities listed under the Design Drafter 4 position. May be assigned independent work or tasks based on the complexity of the task. At this level, you will be recognized as a Senior Designer Drafter with subject matter expertise.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Proficiently skilled in the use of computer-aided drafting (CAD) and product data management (PDM) software tools used to produce models, drawings, layouts and sketches of components or systems.

  • Experienced working in diverse teams and collaborating on designs from rough sketches with minimal guidance from senior level technicians.

Advanced understanding and or knowledge of:

  • Understanding of modeling and drawing drafting principals, application of standards, symbols, notes, GD&T on drawings and models to capture design intent;

  • Engineering, design, and drafting concepts related to a mechanical, electro/mechanical, electrical, civil, etc. disciplines, including engineering materials and their suitability for component design and manufacture;

  • ASME, ANSI, AWS and related industry standards for addressing fit, form and function; and

Expert ability to:

  • Effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and craft personnel;

  • Prepare and/or carry out changes in design, methods of manufacture/assembly, and drafting techniques/procedures in area of discipline; coordinate corrective actions;

  • Coordinate engineering efforts in assigned areas between specialty and other engineering groups or disciplines, with the client, suppliers, and contractors and between other divisional groups;

  • Provide project support. Review project controls, cost estimates, quantity takeoffs, and staffing requirements for proposals, forecasts and change orders.

Proven/demonstrated experience in

  • Providing and evaluating cost estimates for design efforts;

  • Performing drawing checks;

  • Providing technical solutions to complex and/or unique problems, which require the regular use of ingenuity, creativity and independence;

  • Evaluating potential design changes to eliminate future problems. Incorporate lessons learned into standard details and practices;

  • Performing work in accordance with the Conduct of Engineering (CoE) and applicable Federal, State, and applicable codes and standards; and

  • Mentoring junior-level design drafters to perform the requirements described above.

Additional Job Requirements for Designer Drafter 5:

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will be considered a Senior Designer Drafter and Subject Matter Expert. Accordingly, you will be expected to lead all activities associated at the Designer Drafter 4 level. In addition, you may serve as a team lead responsible for the mentoring of junior staff; be assigned complex assignments; be able to work independently and as part of the a team; and utilize technology to accomplish work and continuously improve work processes to meet customer needs.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires an Associate's Degree in an Engineering or Technical field and 5 years of related experience, or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires an Associate's Degree in an Engineering or Technical field and 7 years of related experience, or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Expert knowledge of computer-aided drafting techniques, CAD modeling and design.

  • In-depth experience and working knowledge of three-dimensional (3D) model generation

  • Expert knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principals and procedures

Technical writing sample: With your application, provide a one paragraph sample of technical writing describing the challenges Designer Drafters may face when working within an engineering team along with strategies to overcome these challenges.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year .
