The Actinide Material Processing & Power (AMPP) Division in the Weapons Directorate provides complete, full life-cycle process development, prototyping and production engineering capabilities for all plutonium, uranium and other actinide material components in support of the United States national security and energy missions.
You will support engineering and projects in the development of tooling and equipment for various projects in our development and production areas. Typical processes that are performed include, but are not limited to the following: tooling design and prototyping, reverse engineering, and process development assistance. Responsibilities will entail equipment installation and production support for these processes. You will work closely with other LANL design, tooling, prototype, and fabrication personnel to ensure that these products are compatible for use in a Category 2 nuclear facility. All documentation that is developed will meet nuclear conduct of operations requirements and meet the quality requirements of our diverse customer-base. You will be expected to work independently; work as part of a team; and contribute to continuous process improvements to meet customer requirements.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Proficient in use of computer-aided drafting (CAD) and product data management (PDM) software tools used to produce models, drawings, layouts and sketches of components or systems.
Intermediate level understanding of modeling and drawing drafting principals, application of standards, symbols, notes, GD&T on drawings and models to capture design intent.
Intermediate understanding of ASME, ANSI, AWS and related industry standards for addressing fit, form and function.
Intermediate understanding of engineering, design, and drafting concepts related to a mechanical, electro/mechanical or electrical disciplines.
Intermediate knowledge of principles for design, fabrication, assembly and fielding of components and mechanisms.
Intermediate understanding of component and tool design, fixturing, printed circuit boards, schematics, and facility equipment
Intermediate understanding of machine shop equipment like a mill, lathe, drill press, welder and inspection equipment
Intermediate understanding of engineering materials and their suitability for component design and manufacture.
- Experience working in diverse teams, collaborating on designs from rough sketches with minimal guidance from a senior level technicians.
Education: Position requires a High School diploma or equivalent and 3 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with AutoCAD or ProEngineer Creo or SOLIDWORKS and PDMLink.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with GD&T.
Demonstrated knowledge of reverse engineering and rapid prototyping.
Demonstrated technical knowledge associated with production processes related to manufacturing.
Demonstrated knowledge of mathematical formulas, computations, and data gathering methods.
Active DOE Q clearance.
Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements
for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
