What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Designer/Drafter 3 /4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outline below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties for this position:

  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering design team in support of maintaining and upgrading LANL’s facilities.

  • Prepare quality Computer-Aided Design (CAD) drawings that are in compliance with LANL CAD Standards.

  • Interface with clients, other designers, and engineers to aid in the development of creative cost effective solutions.

  • Interface and coordinate with other disciplines and customers during the design and construction activities.

  • Promote leadership, quality, and safety values in all aspects of job duties.

  • Participate in field walk-downs and data gathering of existing facilities, systems, structures and components.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Designer/Drafter 3 ($50,200 - $77,600)

  • Demonstrated proficient knowledge of engineering drafting, design and detailing.

  • Demonstrated understanding of construction practices.

  • Demonstrated proficient knowledge and experience with Autodesk AutoCAD (2014 or higher preferred) and Revit.

  • Excellent oral and written communication

  • Ability to work in collaboration with a multi-discipline engineering team to ensure drawing coordination and quality.

  • Ability to develop CAD Drawings and design models.

  • Ability to produce work in accordance with budget and schedule constraints.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Proficiency wit MS Office Suite.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge and application of CAD Standards (National CAD Standards–NCS).

  • Ability to anticipate job requirements and the initiative to act accordingly.

  • Ability to produce designs independently and with minimum engagement of the design engineers.

  • Basic knowledge of industry codes and standards (IBC, UMC, UPC, ASME B31, etc.)

  • Requires 3 to 5 years of relevant drafting/design experience.

Designer/Drafter 4 ($60,400 - $95,900) Job requirements in addition to Designer/Drafter 3

  • Significant experience with computer-aided drafting techniques, CAD modeling and design and high-level 3-D parametric CAD systems and proficient knowledge of second CAD system.

  • Advanced knowledge of complex mathematical formulas and computations.

  • Advanced knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.

  • Advanced knowledge of engineering principles and basic technical responsibilities within designated discipline.

  • Ability to perform drafting checks and ensure compliance of drawing packages with ASME Y14.5 or LANL Drafting Manuel as appropriate.

  • Knowledge of industry codes and standards (IBC, UMC, UPC, ASME B31, etc.)

  • Requires a minimum of 6 to 10 years of relevant drafting/design experience.

Desired Skills:

  • DOE experience.

  • Knowledge of industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline

  • Knowledge of Laboratory procedures, standards and policies.

Education:Associates degree in Engineering Drafting and Design, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

The Drafter Designer 1/2 position within the ES Division is assigned to the Engineering Project Delivery (ES-EPD) Group responsible for design services and the Conduct of Engineering (CENG) Program implementation at LANL.
