This position will be filled at either the Engineer 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for an enthusiastic Design Coordinator to work in the Engineering Services – Engineering Project Delivery (ES-EPD) group. This position will manage ES-EPD internal, multi-discipline facility engineering design projects including oversight of the Design Team from project scoping to completion of the design effort. This includes tracking design deliverables, budget, and schedule.

Design Coordinator Engineer 3 ($103,500 - $172,800)
The Design Coordinator Engineer 3 will direct and lead engineering personnel in developing engineering deliverables and products for assigned projects and tasks. This position ensures each project has the appropriate technical resources assigned and that proper engineering processes are followed. The Design Coordinator will coordinate design scoping activities with the customer and Design Team, coordinate site walk downs for the Design Team, coordinate and develop the design cost estimate with the Design Team, and develop and maintain a design schedule with Design Team and track progress using Gantt charts. The Design Coordinator will also conduct kickoff and reoccurring status meetings for the Design Team, conduct Squad Checks to internally review design submittals before interdisciplinary reviews, communicate technical direction to the Design Team, manage and coordinate design review comment responses and resolution with the Design Team, and communicate project status to stakeholders, including the ES-EPD Management, Project Engineer, Project Manager, and other LANL or DOE customers.
Design Coordinator Engineer 4 ($125,500 - $210,600)
In addition to what was outlined above, at this level, the Engineer 4 will ensure the project meets operating requirements as stated in the input criteria documents by ensuring completeness and consistency at acceptance, identify and communicate risk factors from the Design Team to our customers, and mentor junior design engineers, architects, and student interns.

Minimum Job Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, you must exhibit sound knowledge of Design Coordination:
Principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and appropriate standards.
Work planning and control methods.
Working knowledge of facility design practices.
Accordingly, the successful candidate will possess:
Proven experience directing and leading engineering personnel in developing engineering design deliverables.
Demonstrated experience, or knowledge of design engineering concepts, building construction, and applicable DOE and IBC codes for new construction and renovations to existing facilities.
Proven skill in providing technical analysis and report writing.
Proven experience with facility design and project management.
Additional Job Requirements for Design Coordinator Engineer 4:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires advanced to expert experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, including demonstrated ability in leading all aspects of the requirements above, and that of the Design Coordinator Engineer 3 position
Education/Experience at Level 3:
Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.
Education/Experience at Level 4:
Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 12 practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
Knowledge of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards and guides.
Working knowledge of industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline.
Current registration as a Professional Engineer.
Current certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP).

Location: This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. The Telework Pilot is in effect from Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2021, but may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion.Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
