Los Alamos National Laboratory Deputy Group Leader (R&D Manager 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

P-DO is seeking outstanding candidates for the half-time position of Deputy Group Leader (DGL) in P-1, Dynamic Imaging and Radiography. P-1 is centered around one of our main capabilities, radiography. The group’s portfolio includes proton radiography, computational radiographic science and analysis, neutron imaging, advanced diagnostics, technical fielding for subcritical experiments and rare event detection.

The Division underwent strategic planning in FY20, and we have laid out a series of strategic enablers that will help us implement our vision of a fully integrated, collaborative, diverse and inclusive Division where all staff members are equally valued, where collaboration and mutual support are the norm, and where communication and a sense of shared outcome enable us to make the most impactful contributions to LANL’s objectives ranging from world-class peer-reviewed science to excellence in stockpile stewardship.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

The new DGL will be a member of Physics Division Leadership Team, embrace our values, and support our vision. The DGL will join the P-1 group management team in implementing our strategy to ensure the success of P-1 and all of its staff members, safely and securely and with environmental awareness. The DGL will support the group leader in achieving operational excellence, mission execution, project deliverables on time and on budget, as well as in administrative duties ensuring our staff members’ success.

Since this is a half-time position, the successful candidate is expected to secure and maintain a thriving technical program that matches or enriches the group’s portfolio for the other half of their time.

Minimum Requirements:

  • A history of working collaboratively to create a safe, secure, positive and enabling work environment for our staff to thrive

  • Passion to help achieve our vision and a strong sense of shared outcome

  • Knowledge of LANL operations and administrative policies and procedures

  • Research background in an area relevant to the focus of the group

  • Ability to obtain or maintain a Q-clearance, which typically requires U.S. citizenship

  • A detailed cover letter addressing the required and applicable desired skills is required as part of the application.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with handling abnormal occurrences, such as incident reporting and developing and implementing corrective actions and lessons learned activities

  • Experience operating or performing experiments at radiographic facilities

  • Experience conducting dynamic experiments

  • Understanding of classified computing and the associated security envelope

  • Advanced degree in a physical science or engineering field relevant to the main focus of the group; Ph.D. degree preferred.

Education: This position requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a physical science or engineering field with at least 5 years of relevant job experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. An advanced degree is preferred.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
