Los Alamos National Laboratory Datacenter Engineer (Computing Systems Professional 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The work we do at Los Alamos National Laboratory matters to the nation and it matters to the world. You will serve as a member of the Data Center Team, which is responsible for providing operational support Network and Infrastructure Engineering Core Services (NIE-CS). You will be responsible for providing support for 5 data centers that we manage. The data centers that you will be providing support for will include that of Classified and Non-Classified systems. We invite you to demonstrate how your skills will be used to help propel the next generation of brilliant minds in the greatest facility in the world.

The selected candidate will be able to showcase the following skills and experience:

  • Performing data center operations work including equipment installation/removal.

  • Running communication cables and fiber with emphasis on cable management.

  • Validating and providing access to different secure areas and physical securities.

  • Responding to customer inquiries and providing timely solutions to end-user problems.

  • Coordinating with facilities regarding Power and Cooling infrastructure and maintenance.

  • Providing leadership responsibilities in a team setting.

  • Contributing to the development of new and efficient methods of managing data centers and accommodating the array of tenants who reside in them.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

The successful candidate will be required to possess:

  • Advanced knowledge of hardware and operating systems including system architectures, network infrastructures, and client server principles.

  • Ability to review and understand end-to-end work processes.

  • Advanced knowledge of hardware and software integration and testing.

  • Advanced knowledge of power and cooling infrastructure requirements in a high availability environment such as a data center while adhering to PUE methodologies.

  • Ability to translate technical terms to layperson's terms and present them to audiences outside of organization. Skill in working closely with customers and suppliers to define expectations and mutual responsibilities.

  • Knowledge of project management methodologies. Knowledge of risk management assessments.


Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, applicable advanced vendor and/or professional certification is desirable.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced knowledge of Information Technology best practices supporting the first 4 layers of the OSI model.

  • Familiarity with DCIM software solutions such as but not limited to: Racktables, Struxureware, Eaton, Sunbird.

  • Certifications that align with the requirements and job functions.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
