Job Information

Los Alamos National Laboratory Condensed Matter Theory Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Group of Condensed Matter and Complex Systems in the Theoretical Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an immediate postdoctoral position opening in the area of computational simulation and theoretical modeling of strongly correlated materials with a focus on actinides. The opened position provides an opportunity to pursue cutting-edge calculation techniques for studying dynamics in strongly correlated materials such as actinides, actinide compounds, and nuclear fuels. The project will focus on a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation approach to model the behavior of relevant materials. This will involve using ab initio techniques based on DFT as well as extracting data for classical MD force fields. Candidates will work closely with experimentalists to tailor simulations for comparison to measurements.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

The successful candidate must have strong skills in first-principles DFT electronic structure and total energy calculations of electronic or magnetic materials. Experience with molecular dynamics calculations is highly desirable. The candidate is required to have good team skills to work closely with the experimental teams at LANL. Strong communication and language skills, as evidenced by publications and cover letter, are essential.

Education/Experience: Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, and Materials Science (completed within the last 5 years).

Desired Qualifications:

Experience with DFT packages such as Abinit, Quantum Espresso, Siesta, VASP, and/or WIEN2k is desirable as is any molecular dynamics simulation experience using LAMPPS, GROMACS, or other classical MD codes. A background in coding with Python, Fortran, C++, etc. is also advantageous.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

COVID Vaccine :

The COVID vaccine is mandatory for all Laboratory employees, on-site contractors, and on-site subcontractors unless granted an accommodation under applicable state or federal law. This requirement will apply to those working on-site, those teleworking, and all new hires.

Note to Applicants:

Please apply for this position online, and also send a resume, publication list, research interests, a brief statement of future plans and the names of three references to Dr. Roxanne Tutchton (rtutchton@lanl.gov). The position has an initial appointment of two years. Additional information on salary ranges and other benefits can be found online athttp://www.lanl.gov/science/postdocs/.
