Los Alamos National Laboratory Computational Surface Scientist (Scientist 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Nuclear Materials Science Group (MST-16) of the Materials Science and Technology Division is seeking an outstanding and highly motivated candidate for the position of R&D Scientist 2 or 3, with a focus of computational surface science using electronic structure and/or molecular dynamic calculations at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The successful candidate will be expected to have knowledge in use of density functional theory (DFT) codes, and/or molecular dynamic codes to study the mechanisms of oxidation and corrosion of actinide surfaces. The successful candidate will interact closely across groups and divisions on collaborative projects to help address LANL missions.

Nuclear Materials Science (MST-16) is an international leader in plutonium science and engineering and supports a variety of fundamental to applied programs, including Plutonium Sustainment, Pit Surveillance, Science Programs, Life Extension Programs, Advanced Certification, various global security programs, and Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) projects. MST-16 maintains a multidisciplinary expertise in actinide materials science and engages in areas important to Laboratory missions, including material characterization, phase stability, mechanical and dynamic properties, aging, electronic structure, corrosion, and surface science. Our work takes place in the Plutonium Facility (PF- 4), the Radiological Laboratory/Utility/Office Building (RLUOB), the Target Fabrication Facility (TFF), and numerous other facilities at LANL and across the country.

R&D Scientist 2 ($94,100-$155,700)

Research activities and responsibilities of the successful candidate will include the following:

  • Execute theoretical calculations that will complement experimental efforts

  • Contribute to the completion of program milestones associated with various core mission programs as well as fundamental research and development projects

  • Actively participate in profession societies and conferences, and working groups

R&D Scientist 3 ($113,100 - $190,900)

In addition to the responsibilities and activities listed above, the R&D Scientist 3 will:

  • Propose and execute theoretical efforts to help support experimental techniques, which include XPS, Auger, ToF-SIMS, ellipsometry, and PM-IRRAS.

  • Lead a small team of scientists

  • Lead to the development of multi-scale modeling

  • Contribute to the professional development of junior scientists and postdocs

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Expertise is required in the knowledge and implementation of electronic structure (DFT) codes or molecular dynamic codes

  • Demonstration of dependability and ability to work effectively, and to work in a team environment

  • Demonstrate a commitment to technical and scientific excellence as well as timeliness of deliverables

  • Demonstrate a record of successful documentation of technical work and the ability to express ideas clearly in oral and written formats

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which generally requires US citizenship

In addition to the requirements outlined above, the R&D Scientist 3 level requires:

  • At least five years of relevant work experience.

  • Demonstrated experience interacting with programmatic customers and developing new projects.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in studying 4f and/or 5f strongly-correlated materials

  • Understanding of materials science and/or familiarity of surface science techniques

  • Experience of using theoretical methods for calculating a variety of surface science problems, such as gas adsorption, energy barriers for dissociation, reaction kinetics, surface catalysis, etc.

  • DOE Q clearance

Education/Experience:

Scientist 2: Position requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Materials science, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field from an accredited college and university and 4 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Ph.D. is highly preferred.

Scientist 3: Position requires a minimum of a Master’s degree in Materials science, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field from an accredited college and university and 12 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Ph.D. is highly preferred.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
