What You Will Do_
LANL Computational Physics is eagerly searching for masters or doctoral-level career scientists / engineers with research interests and experience in computational geometry and associated software development. Our wide-ranging areas of interest include geometry modeling, mesh generation, and simulation management software towards large scale, massively parallel, multi-physics simulations run at LANL. Within the Lagrangian Codes Group, the Setup Team develops and maintains geometry modeling, mesh generation, and simulation management software for the LANL users of these multi-physics simulation codes.
The duties of our professional staff members include research and development of geometric modeling methods, the implementation of these methods into production codes (using excellent software development practices), the testing of these methods, and educating and supporting users as they adopt these methods. We encourage mentoring for new staff to build skills quickly, and we work within a dynamic team environment that facilitates productive and collaborative relationships with our software users.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
An MS plus 3 years of relevant experience, or PhD, or equivalent combination of education and experience, in applied mathematics, engineering, physics, computer science, or related field.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Effectively work as part of a team
Proficiency with C++ and Python programming on Linux systems
Recognized as a technical authority in areas applicable to mission and deliverables as evidenced by accomplishments in code and/or model development and talks and publications delivered to peers on work accomplished.
Self-starter; Demonstrated initiative for continuous learning and development in area of expertise.
Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance (which normally requires U.S. citizenship and always requires a drug-free life)
Experience developing geometric modeling software such as CAD systems and/or libraries
Working knowledge of geometry modeling techniques and algorithms, including:
Splines techniques (e.g., NURBS, Bezier, etc.)
2D and 3D geometry modeling operations (e.g. intersection, union, approximation, repair of defective geometry, etc.)
Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG) model construction, editing, and query
Boundary Representation (BREP) model construction, editing, and query
Working knowledge of mesh generation methods and algorithms, such as block-structured meshing, paving, and advancing front triangle/tetrahedral meshing
Working knowledge of mesh optimization techniques, such as mesh smoothing and mesh reconnection
Experience developing and/or using computational physics software (e.g., CFD, FEA, Eulerian and/or Lagrange hydrodynamics, etc.)
Working knowledge of both distributed and shared memory parallel programming and associated libraries (e.g., MPI, OpenMP, OpenCL, etc.)
Working knowledge of GUI development with Qt and/or data visualization with OpenGL
Education: PhD in applied mathematics, engineering, physics, computer science, or related field, or MS plus three years of experience is strongly preferred. A minimum of a BS is required.
