Los Alamos National Laboratory Civil Transporation Engineer (Engineering 1/2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Engineer 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

As a Transportation System Engineer you will help manage and administer the roads infrastructure and snow removal maintenance and operation programs and respective budgets for the Engineering Services - Utilities and Infrastructure (ES-UI) Utility Team. As a system engineer you will be responsible for facility management, operations, construction, maintenance, repair, upgrading of all roads, parking lots, bridges, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, guardrails, barricades, traffic signals, signs, and pavement striping across the Laboratory. You will provide subject matter expertise on issues involving roads and traffic infrastructure projects, to ensure quality, safety and reliability. You will participate as an integrated project team member to ensure that all LANL projects are designed and completed to acceptable standards in the area of roads and traffic. You will contribute to the annual condition assessment of all roads system infrastructure across the site. You will prepare estimates of material quantities and labor and equipment necessary to complete projects, work orders, and budget requests. You will be responsible for researching engineering procedures and materials to determine the best and most cost effective methods and materials to be used in an assigned project. You will investigate traffic conditions and safety concerns and prepare informational reports and recommendations.

Engineer 1 (Responsibilities)

  • Collecting and managing field data and transferring data to GIS database.

  • Performing various engineering and traffic safety studies

  • Address safety concerns/complaints for transportation systems.

  • Contribute to system upgrades and design modifications.

  • Contribute to scope definition for new utility installation and/or maintenance projects.

Engineer 2 (Responsibilities)

  • Assist in defining preventative and corrective maintenance requirements for roads, parking lots, bridges, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, guardrails, barricades, traffic signals, and signs.

  • Assist in management walk around reviews.

  • Implement improvements associated with concerns investigations.

  • Recommend and implement system upgrades and design modifications.

  • Perform design reviews or new projects across the site.

  • Contribute to new project siting requests and permits and requirements identification (PRID) reviews.

  • Civil design for new utility installation and/or maintenance projects.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineer 1

  • One (1) to Two (2) years of experience dealing with varied aspects of highway and traffic engineering, specifically as they relate to the application of the AASHTO, MUTCD, and NMDOT standards, policies, practices and principles.

  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems successfully, communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and work effectively in a team environment as well as independently.

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of engineering theory, codes, laws, rules, regulations and procedures governing design, construction and maintenance.

  • Basic knowledge of traffic impact studies, corridor planning studies, conceptual roadway design, roads maintenance, and traffic signal operations and maintenance.

  • Basic knowledge of DOE and industry engineering and facility operation and maintenance requirements and best practices.

  • Familiarity with writing and reviewing technical documents and procedures such as engineering design changes and operating procedures.

  • Basic knowledge of drafting and computer aided design.

  • Working knowledge of national codes and standards.

Engineer 2

  • Three (3) or more years of experience dealing with varied aspects of highway and traffic engineering, specifically as they relate to the application of the AASHTO, MUTCD, and NMDOT standards, policies, practices and principles.

  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems successfully, communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and work effectively in a team environment as well as independently.

  • Experience in traffic impact studies, corridor planning studies, conceptual roadway design, roads maintenance, and traffic signal operations and maintenance.

  • Working knowledge of DOE and industry engineering and facility operation and maintenance requirements and best practices.

  • Experience writing and reviewing technical documents and procedures such as engineering design changes and operating procedures.

  • Experience with drafting and general computer aided design.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of MicroPaver, Synchro, Centrax software

  • Demonstrated experience in managing and directing the work of others.

  • Demonstrated experience in project management.

  • Experience with preparing and managing budgets and having fiscal responsibility for projects and programs.

  • Knowledge of LANL Engineering Standards, DOE Orders.

  • Skilled in principles and techniques of AutoCad, GIS systems.

  • IMSA Certified- Work Zone Safety and other applicable courses.

Education/Experience at Lower Level:

Position requires a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering (or other related discipline) from an ABET-accredited college or university and 0 to 2 years of practical work experience.

Education/Experience at Higher Level:

Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering (or other related discipline) from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.
