What You Will Do
The Intelligence & Space Research (ISR) Division seeks a Chief Systems Engineer to lead a signiﬁcant eﬀort across the Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) Division. Major ISR programs include satellite‐based nuclear detonation detection (SNDD) programs, Agile Space (cube sat) programs, Space Exploration programs and others. The ISR Systems Engineering Integration & Test (SEIT) activity annual budget is currently more than $5M and growing, supporting 10 staﬀ working on: Systems Engineering, Integration & Test, Radiation Eﬀects, Reliability Assessment, and Environmental Testing. The successful candidate will also directly support programs as they establish SEIT activities and/or require senior level guidance.
Leading and developing a team of systems engineers, test directors and radiation and reliability analysts to apply best practices and lessons learned across ISR programs.
Tailoring LANL policies and customer and industry standards for use by speciﬁc ISR programs running the gamut from high reliability, long duration systems through concept exploration experiments and everything in between.
Coordinating with line and program management to ensure the team is resourced appropriately and provides high quality, timely and technically independent support to projects and programs that satisfy customer requirements.
Performing systems engineering and coordination activities to support the design and development of ISR systems to ensure the system‐wide integration of hardware, software, reliability, maintainability, safety and other requirements in the total engineering eﬀort.
Interfacing directly with stakeholders including LANL, partner and customer management as needed to propose new work, advance program objectives, clarify requirements and resolve issues.
Coordinating across projects to execute system integration and testing plans.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated experience with development, integration and test of space systems.
Demonstrated experience working with space hardware and software development teams.
Demonstrated experience across all phases of space projects from concept through deployment.
Demonstrated expert knowledge of and experience in failure or root cause analysis.
Application of modern Systems Engineering on a signiﬁcant project.
Experience managing and leading diverse teams composed of a wide variety of technical skills.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q and SCI clearance.
Systems engineering experience with satellite‐based sensor systems.
Experience performing mission, functional, cost‐beneﬁt and risk analysis.
Experience managing budget, scope, and schedule aspects of technical projects.
Experience integrating payloads onto spacecraft and the associated command and control (ground) systems.
Experience with Model‐Based Systems Engineering concepts.
Active Q and/or SCI clearance.
Education: B.S. in Electrical, Computer, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering or related engineering degree from an ABET accredited college or university and at least 10 years of related experience; or an M.S. and 7 years of related experience.
Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.
The Space Instrument Realization Group (ISR‐5) in the Intelligence & Space Research Division provides engineering and technical expertise to support the development and deployment of space‐based custom instrumentation for national security applications. The Group consists of about 40 engineers, designers and technicians (electrical and mechanical) teaming across several ISR Division projects.
