What You Will Do

The Postdoctoral Associate candidate will be responsible for conducting independent research and engaging in a broad set of activities across several scientific disciplines. Projects will support of research and development specifically related to chemistry, materials, and chemical engineering. The successful candidate will: apply scientific principles and methods to solve complicated technical problems; develop novel techniques or principles; analyze data (raw experimental data or within a computational domain).

The position will require direct interface with colleagues, customers and sponsors, the preparation of proposals and reports, and also includes delivery of program/progress updates. C-CDE anticipates a number of postdoctoral opportunities for chemists, material scientists, and chemical engineers in one or more of the following areas:

  • Synthetic approaches to new materials, including nano-materials

  • Molecular scintillator materials

  • Water treatment technology

  • Microfluidics

  • Corrosion Science

  • Electrochemical systems

  • Thermochemical energy storage

  • Chemical reactor design and operations

  • Synthesis, structural characterization, and reactivity of heterogeneous catalysts

  • Synthesis of materials for sensor applications (radiation or chemical/biological agent detection)

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Required Skills: The successful candidate will have 1) self-motivation with a desire to be a technical leader. 2) A demonstrated record of technical excellence and innovative thinking as evidenced by publication and presentation records and letters of reference; 3) An ability to work effectively both in a team environment and independently to meet programmatic milestones and scientific goals; 4) Effective verbal and written communication skills; 5) An ability to work efficiently under pressure in a rapidly changing environment; 6) Excellent organizational skills; 7) Experience in applying fundamental scientific and/or engineering concepts to complex, multidisciplinary problems; 8) A Ph.D. completed within the last 5 years in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a related field.

Postdoc Eligibility:

Candidates are eligible to be considered for a postdoctoral position within five years of receiving their Ph.D. and the Postdoc Program Office submission deadlines corresponding to the quarterly meeting being proposed, or will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment.

Desired Skills:

A broad background and interest in interdisciplinary science. Ability to apply fundamental concepts and techniques developed in one discipline to a variety of (and perhaps incompletely defined) problems traditionally associated with other disciplines.

Education:

A Ph.D. completed in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a related field.

Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.

This position will be filled at a Postdoctoral Associate Level. The position resides in the Chemical Diagnostics and Engineering Group. The Chemical Diagnostics and Engineering Group is an applied technology organization focused on resolving national security-related issues in stockpile manufacturing and support, surveillance, applied and basic energy sciences, threat reduction, public health, the environment, and space exploration. The group's core approach involves the integrated development and application of technologies utilizing underlying scientific expertise in Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Materials Science, Microbiology, Explosives, Chemical Process Development and/or Chemical Engineering. The highly interdisciplinary nature of these activities requires scientists and engineers who can readily operate within, and transition between, the traditional academic disciplines.
