Los Alamos National Laboratory Chemical Diagnostics and Engineering Scientist (Scientist 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Scientist 2 will be responsible for leading and supporting research areas and broad sets of activities across several scientific disciplines in support of research and development (R&D) activities specifically related to Organic and Inorganic Analytical Chemistry and Separations Science, with applications in materials science, polymers, the environment, industrial processing, and hazardous waste. The Scientist 2 will have direct oversight of technicians, students, and postdocs. The candidate will need to be able to apply the scientific method to address technical problems, develop novel analytical techniques, analyze data, and outcomes from experiments or from observational processes in the context of the underlying scientific principles or models. A Scientist 2 is a fully functioning professional with established expertise in one or more of the scientific disciplines described above. The position will require direct interface with sponsors and program managers; development of novel ideas, concepts, solutions and capabilities; manage laboratory capabilities and staff; proposal writing; travel to conferences and project meetings; writing and delivering reports; and project financial oversight.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and demonstrated record of technical proficiency as indicated by a PhD and postdoctoral appointment, and represented by external publications, patent disclosures, presentations, proposals, and reports

  • Well established and documented expertise in Organic and Inorganic Analytical Chemistry and/or Separations Science and their application to areas such as material science, polymers, transuranic and actinide fuel cycle and forensic processes, environmental monitoring and remediation, industrial processing, or hazardous waste

  • Experience working in a glovebox or open front hood within a radiological and/or nuclear facility, and willingness and ability to perform hands-on operations with radioactive and nuclear materials

  • Analytical experience using characterization techniques such as electroanalytical chemistry, UV-vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), combustion elemental analysis (EA), inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), and inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (ICP-MS)

  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance, which usually requires US citizenship

  • Must submit a resume with a comprehensive cover letter that addresses all of the minimum job requirements of the position along with a statement of scientific research interests and professional goals.

Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related field from an accredited college or university, and a minimum of 4 years of related experience as post-doctoral research at a university, National Labs, or equivalent experience. A Ph.D. is preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Active Q clearance

  • Experience in interfacing with technical sponsors from government agencies, National Labs, industry, or academics

  • Experience in peer reviewing the work of others within own organization and/or participating in peer reviews across organizations or multiple disciplines

  • Experience performing laboratory equipment or instrument specification, procurement, assembly, modification, maintenance, or repair such as gloveboxes, vacuum pumps, and spectrophotometers

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Where You Will Work

The Chemical Diagnostics and Engineering Group (C-CDE) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking an outstanding and highly motivated person for the position of R&D Scientist 2. C-CDE is a R&D organization focused on resolving national security-related issues in nuclear stockpile stewardship, applied and basic energy sciences, threat reduction, public health, and the environment. The group's core approach involves the integrated development and application of technologies utilizing underlying scientific expertise in Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Materials Science, Polymers, Bioscience, Chemical Process Development, and Chemical Engineering. The highly interdisciplinary nature of this group requires scientists, engineers, and technicians who can seamlessly operate within, and transition between, traditional academic disciplines. The successful applicant will work both collaboratively and independently on multiple projects.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
