What You Will Do
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and the U.S. National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) are seeking a highly motivated and technically excellent postdoctoral researcher to join our pulsed Magnet Technology Development Team, part of the Magnet Science Group (MAG) and the Materials Physics and Applications Division (MPA).The Magnet Technology Development Team has a central and critical role in LANL’s portion of the NHMFL and operation of the Pulsed Field Facility (PFF). The NHMFL is a user facility dedicated to basic research, with research initiatives in materials, energy, and life sciences. The PFF holds the world record for nondestructive, repeatable magnetic fields for science experiments (100 Tesla), with users coming to LANL from around the world. Funding for the NHMFL and the PFF comes primarily from the National Science Foundation (NSF), with additional support from LANL institutional science investments. This is a very exciting time for MPA-MAG and the PFF, with new projects for making major leaps in maximum magnetic field, simultaneously achieving ultra-high pressure, understanding the nature of quantum matter, and a wide variety of measurement techniques.
We have an immediate opening for a postdoctoral researcher in the design, simulation, and development of large-scale, high-field pulsed magnets. These magnets push the scientific and technological limits in field strength, stress and strain of constituent materials, removal of heat after each pulse, and useful lifetime under these extreme conditions. The successful candidate will gain in-depth knowledge in the most advanced techniques to address these problems and will be involved in the complete development lifecycle, from design and modeling through fabrication and operation. A major theme of this work is the development, validation, and use of finite element method (FEM) simulations to solve coupled, multi-engineering challenges for the design of large magnet systems. These FEM simulations required combined mechanical, structural, thermal, and electromagnetic analyses, which can be developed and implemented in a number of computational frameworks (e.g. FORTRAN, Python, COMSOL, ANSYS). The selected postdoctoral researcher will be involved in other research activities related to the development, fabrication and testing of new materials (special conductors, reinforcing materials, cryogenic materials…) and components of magnet assembly.
The PFF is located on the main LANL campus in Los Alamos, New Mexico. LANL is one of three NHMFL partner institutions, the other two are the University of Florida, Gainesville, and Florida State University, Tallahassee. The NHMFL is sponsored primarily by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Division of Materials Research, with additional support from the State of Florida and the Department of Energy. LANL provides unique capabilities to the PFF for the NHMFL in the form of a 1.4 GVA pulsed power system. In addition to the 100 Tesla Multi-Shot Pulsed Magnet and the 60 T Long Pulse Magnet, the NHMFL features several capacitor-driven pulsed magnets and state-of-the-art diagnostic capabilities for materials science research. The PFF supports a user facility, develops magnet technology, and advances science and technology using high magnetic fields in support of the goals and objectives of NSF and LANL.

What You Need
Qualifications We Require:
Demonstrated experience conducting research or development in physical science, engineering, or a related field.
Demonstrated experience in modeling, simulation, or computation for physical science, engineering, or a related field.
Demonstrated experience in the development of complex or large-scale equipment, infrastructure, or instrumentation, e.g. simulation, design, engineering, fabrication, commissioning, testing, etc.
Demonstrated experience documenting and reporting on technical work, for example through written plans, proposals, reports, papers, articles, or theses.
Demonstrated experience working both independently and as part of team.
A Ph.D. degree in physical science, engineering, or a related field within the time period allowed for postdoctoral research at LANL (typically, the past five years; see http://www.lanl.gov/careers/career-options/postdoctoral-research/index.php).
Qualifications We Desire:
Demonstrated experience in multi-physics FEM simulations for a large-scale systems, especially those involving structural, thermal, and electromagnetic analyses
Advanced programming skills as demonstrated in any of a wide range of computational frameworks (e.g. Python, Fortran, COMSOL or ANSYS).
Demonstrated experience in automating, controlling, or scripting numerical simulations or development of application programming interfaces (APIs), e.g. using Java, C++, Matlab, or similar framework.
Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of mechanical or structural properties of different types of materials; experience with stress-strain measurements
Hands-on experiences in designing and construction of large-scale mechanical structures or devices
Experience with computer-aided design (CAD) software, such as AutoCAD, Inventor, Solid Works, etc.Demonstrated experience and in-depth understanding of generating, using, and conducting measurements in ultra-high magnetic fields.
Ability and inclination to contribute to a wide range of basic-research and mission-science programs as needs and opportunities evolve over time.
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance (generally requires U.S. citizenship).
