Los Alamos National Laboratory Based Detection Instrumentation Electrical Engineer (R&D Engineer 1) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Are you passionate about your work and have the desire to work towards the mission of solving some of our nation’s most significant security issues? If so, you should consider joining our team! We are seeking R&D Electrical Engineers with interest in digital design, analog design, power supply design or RF design. The Space Electronics and Signal Processing group is looking for passionate electrical engineers who have a strong interest in the development of custom instrumentation for various space-based detection systems. These systems can include:

  • systems being developed for the High Altitude and Space Monitoring program in support of the nonproliferation and nuclear event detection missions;

  • systems for planetary science missions;

  • smallsat and cubesat systems.

ISR-4 is a Space Electronics and Signal Processing group that specializes in space-based radiation measurement and basic science missions. ISR has been developing, building, and operating space based systems for over 50 years. In addition, the group develops electronics for terrestrial and airborne scientific and national security applications along with the requisite ground support and test equipment. The group’s projects receive funding and requirements from various government agencies including the DOE, DOD, and NASA. Projects are executed through a close interaction between all disciplines of engineers, technicians, and scientists, which fosters a highly creative and dynamic research and development environment. Projects within ISR division are developed from concept to operational support after launch or field deployment. Responsibilities include the specification, design, modeling, implementation, verification and testing of electrical circuits or FPGAs. Emphasis is on self-initiative and technical leadership in a small team environment of rapid prototype, high quality electrical assemblies.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineering Expertise:

Demonstrated coursework and advanced studies in one or more of the following electrical engineering focus areas:

  • Analog Design : Fundamentals of analog components, Signal conditioning of electronic sensors, High speed analog to digital conversion

  • Digital Design : Synchronous design, synthesis, routing, simulation, testing, and technical documentation of FPGA or other digital circuits, VHDL or Verilog , Test benches for FPGA or ASIC based design and Digital circuit card design

  • RF/Microwave : RF/microwave components and their system applications (amplifiers, receivers, synthesizers); Fabrication and packaging for RF/microwave circuits and systems and Transmission lines, impedance matching, and signal integrity

  • Power Supply Design : Linear regulators as well as switch mode power DC/DC converters; power supply filtering, switching devices, protection and gate drives; power supply control theory, analysis, and testing.

Design & Analysis Knowledge:

Demonstrated experience with advanced design & analysis tools, such as schematic capture tools, analog or digital simulation tools, electromagnetic design tools, MATLAB, and/or printed circuit board layout and signal integrity analysis tools


Demonstrated ability to work closely with teams. Must be able to build and maintain effective relationships


Strong written and verbal and presentation skills.


Minimum Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or similar

  • Preferred from an ABET accredited college or university

  • Advanced degree preferred (Master of Science or Engineering)

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of configuration management and formal verification methods

  • Experience with space-flight hardware development and testing methods desirable.

  • Experience debugging & troubleshooting circuits/prototypes

  • For digital design candidates

  • Knowledge of digital communication systems and/or other digital signal processing

  • Knowledge of high speed digital interfaces

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
