Los Alamos National Laboratory B61 CSA System Engineer (R&D Engineer 4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Weapon Systems Engineering (W) Division provides systems engineering and program management to ensure the safety, reliability, and security of our nation’s nuclear stockpile for the entire life cycle. (W) Division is responsible for leadership of activities in stockpile surveillance, assessment, certification, and life extension projects.

The successful applicant will work in the B61 Systems Engineering group (W-1) as a CSA Systems Engineer. W-1 ensures that ongoing B61 Legacy stockpile activities are coordinated with B61-12 Life Extension Program (LEP) work to support the successful execution of the LEP. W-1 also serves as the Laboratory coordinator for all B61 Legacy external programmatic leadership activities with the National Nuclear Security Administration, Sandia National Laboratories, the US Air Force, and the Department of Defense. W-1 has the technical and programmatic responsibility for the work of a diverse group of Laboratory scientists, nuclear weapons physics designers, and engineers in support of LANL’s mission to sustain the nuclear warheads in the B61 Legacy program.

As a CSA system engineer in W-1, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Serve as the CSA technical interface between W-1/Q-15 and the production agency (PA), surveillance engineers, and primary physics communities.

  • Lead and coordinate technical projects associated with the B61 CSA and report out results to LANL management.

  • Evaluate input to the Annual Assessment Reports with respect to CSA health.

  • Attend technical meetings and discussion on behalf of the B61 Systems Engineering Group.

  • Lead efforts directed at addressing potential knowledge gaps within the CSA, and evaluate and prioritize new evaluation tools that could help address such concerns.

  • Communicate and work interdependently with personnel involved in CSA scope at LANL, which includes but is not limited to; W-9 system surveillance engineers, weapon system engineers, SIGMA Division, MST Division, primary physicists, and W-Division management.

  • Serve as technical lead for B61 PSFN/SFN/SFIs associated with the CSA.

  • Serve as technical lead for B61-12 CSA production and contributor to B61-12 AUR full rate production.

  • Resolve process related issues at Y12 and/or KCNSC related to the CSA and/or its subcomponents.

  • Collaborate and coordinate with MST and Sigma on material related issues.

  • Serve as lead on B61 Weapons Systems FMEA and collaborate with other Weapons Systems groups on topics relating to this project.

  • Continue to support Secondary Mod 12 PRTs as necessary.

  • Some moderate travel may be required to the various production agencies.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Weapon Engineering Experience

Working knowledge of nuclear weapon design, development, or stockpile requirements. Advanced knowledge of engineering and material science principles and practices. Demonstrated experience with materials used in LANL weapons designs and methods used for characterization of these materials.

Technical Leadership

Demonstrated ability in leading projects by assembling teams across multiple organizations, establishing project plans, assigning tasks to team members, and reporting progress. Proven ability to reach milestones and produce deliverables while remaining with budget constraints. Demonstrated ability to interact with internal and external customers.

Problem Solving

Demonstrated ability to generate and apply innovative approaches to solve complex problems. Proven record of achievements in a technical field.

Communication and Teamwork

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and through written documentation. Experience in communicating with coworkers, laboratory management and customers. Proven record of working effectively as a team member. Demonstrated ability to seek technical input from experts.

Education/Experience

Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Applicant must currently hold a Q Clearance with Sigma 15 authorization, or have the ability to obtain a Q clearance and Sigma 15 authorization.

  • General knowledge of the engineering authorization system and document management systems.

  • Experience in technical report writing.

  • Working knowledge of practices related to working with Special Nuclear Material, classified documents and parts.

  • Current or previous experience as a derivative classifier

  • Ph.D. in related field is preferred.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
