Job Information

Los Alamos National Laboratory Advanced Electron Microscopy and Micromechanical Testing Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

MST-8 is seeking a postdoc for electron microscopy based characterization of deformed microstructures in hexagonal close packed (HCP) metals and refractory high entropy alloys (HEAs). Techniques will include conventional diffraction contrast (S)TEM, in situ straining TEM, HR-TEM, EBSD/3D-EBSD, and micromechanical testing at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Nano-beam diffraction, precession electron diffraction (PED), and other EM techniques may also be performed at other EM user facilities. The successful candidate will work with a team of experimentalist and modelers to develop and validate models of HCP deformation and mechanical properties of refractory HEAs . Of particular importance is the role of interfaces (twin and phase boundaries) and the 3D nature of boundary kinetics in HCP metals, and dislocation plasticity vs grain boundary plasticity in nanocrystalline HEAs. The position will be awarded to the candidate demonstrating exceptional talent with a successful collaborative and scientific track record.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Expertise is required in conventional diffraction contrast (scanning) transmission electron microscopy (S)TEM and high resolution TEM.

  • Experience characterizing defects (dislocation Burgers vectors, twin boundary character, phase boundaries) using (S)TEM and HR-TEM.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of metals deformation behavior.

  • Expertise in micromechanical testing of materials (nanoindentation, micropillar testing, microtensile testing)

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with a monochromated, image-corrected FEI Titan and other FEI SEMs and TEMs.

  • Experience with HCP metals.

  • Experience with EM base lattice strain measurements (PED, nano-beam diffraction, GPA, PPA)

  • Experience with EBSD. Experience with FIB based 3D-EBSD.

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which generally requires US citizenship.

Education: A PhD in materials science, physics, chemistry, or a related engineering discipline completed within the last 5 years or soon to be completed.

Note to Applicants: For technical questions related to this position contact L. Capolungo (laurent@lanl.gov)
