Los Alamos National Laboratory Accountant 3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Accountant 3 to support the Controller Division. In this role, you will have the ability to provide General Ledger Team support and become a member of the Controller-Financial Reporting and Treasury (CNTL-FINRPT) Group.

The Controller group provides accounting services to LANL. The selected candidate will report to the Controller Financial Reporting and Treasury (CNTL-FINRP) Group Team Leader and will support the group mission by; insuring the integrity of all LANL financial data, insuring income statements and balance sheets are accurately stated for both internal and external customers, running the month and year-end closing cycles, analyzing data, solving problems that requires complete understanding how a complex financial enterprise system works, approve journal entries, and provide answers to auditors, create presentations and other data requests as required.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Accounting Experience

Comprehensive knowledge and experience of accounting/financial concepts and principles to include Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and cost accounting standards (CAS). Demonstrated knowledge and experience with developing, implementing and enforcing internal controls for accounting operations. Comprehensive knowledge of accounting and finance functions.

Demonstrated Comprehensive knowledge and experience developing and maintaining accounting control systems, analysis and interpretation of trends requiring management’s attention. Broad experience preparing financial and management reports, with proven ability to model continuous efforts to improve operations, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide a quality product in a complex Enterprise Reporting System (ERP).

Customer Service, Organization, Teamwork and Dependability

Excellent organizational and prioritization skills with proven ability to follow through completion on multiple tasks, often under strict deadlines, frequent interruptions, and changing priorities; Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills; knowledge and experience working effectively within a team environment and interacting and networking with all levels of internal and external personnel and customers. Excellent interpersonal skills in resolving, persuading, motivating, negotiating, influencing, and building consensus among others with tact and diplomacy in order to successfully implement changes and acceptance of new ideas or concepts.


Demonstrated proficient use of an integrated ERP system coupled with advanced skills using software applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.).

Problem Solving and Research

Proven ability in conducting research in accounting and business issues making informed opinions and alternatives with proven ability in identifying opportunities for continuous improvement, and taking action to implement solutions. Experience in researching, gathering, analyzing data, summarizing results, resolving problems and issues both independently and as a team member.


Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation; master’s degree preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Understanding DOE STARS and NNSA NDAA reporting requirements that are subject to NNSA/DOE and other governmental regulations.

  • Experience working in a fully integrated enterprise system: Project accounting, general ledger, disbursements, reimbursable work, treasury, and a working knowledge how systems are interrelated.

  • Advanced experience using Excel, Word and other database query tools (SQL).

  • Ability to develop recommendations for policies and procedures and enhancements of systems, strengthen internal controls, maximize and streamline our accounting operations.

  • Ability to mentor others, fostering a respectful and productive learning environment.

  • Flexibility to quickly learn and contribute in new areas of interest that advances the Financial Reporting and Treasury Group.

  • MBA/CPA or advanced degree in a related field.

Location: This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. Employee participation in the Telework Pilot may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion. Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
