Los Alamos National Laboratory Access Control Specialist (Security Specialist 1/2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
As a vital member of the Personnel Security group, reporting to the Access Control Team Leader, you will serve a vital function for the Laboratory’s Badge Office. The processing of requests for badges is a critical security element for protection of our nation’s security assets. Personnel Security is comprised of the Badge Office, Control of Classified Visits, Clearance Processing, FOCI, HRP, Drug/Alcohol Testing Program, and Security Awareness.
Personnel Security is one of the busiest group at Los Alamos National Laboratory. To obtain success in this role, you must demonstrate strong attention to detail and the ability to interact professionally and proactively with other individuals, groups, and independently.
This position will be filled at either the Security Specialist 1/Security Specialist 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Security Specialist 1 $58,000 - $90,800
You will be part of a multi-team effort to process large amounts of workers for HSPD-12 federal credentials and locally issued badges. You will work with multiple workers and visitors each day via telephone, chat, e-mail and in-person. You will validate requests, verify identity & citizenship and review official documents to ensure only authorized individuals are granted access to the Laboratory. You will capture photos, encode magnetic stripes and create badges as part of your regular duties. You will be required to learn all applicable rules and regulations related to Access Control at the Laboratory and you will protect personal identifiable information.
Security Specialist 2 $71,000 - $112,700
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will actively mentor new hires and lower level Security Specialists to help foster and promote professional development. You will provide backup support for other security personnel with other areas of responsibility within Personnel Security. You will assist in identifying potentially more effective methods of work operation and provide resolution and solutions to a diverse range of security challenges within your area of expertise.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Experience working in an office responsible for granting access.
Demonstrated experience working with high volumes of customers with great attention to detail and protection of PII as part of a team and independently.
Demonstrated customer service skills including experience interacting successfully with all levels of employees and management, external customers, and other government agencies, etc.
Ability to effectively interface and integrate at all levels and broad knowledge of the Laboratory mission, organizations, programs, policies, and procedures.
Additional Job Requirements for Security Specialist 2:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Demonstrated experience with General Services Administration (GSA), USAccess, and HSPD-12 roles and responsibilities, specifically HSPD-12 Sponsorship.
Knowledge and experience with Oracle Business Systems; Relational Databases, Security Applications such as Badging, Queue Management System, Cleared Visitor, FOCI, Clearance Processing, HSPD-12 Sponsorship, Enrollment, and Activation activities.
Knowledge and experience with DOE Orders and LANL requirements related to Safeguards and Security Programs, specifically DOE O 470.4B, DOE O 473.3A, and SD 206.2.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires an Associate’s Degree in Information, Records Management, or Security- related field or related degree and 2 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Management, or Security related field and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Excellent organizational skills for project planning, execution, and management.
Demonstrated experience participating in audits and self-assessments.
Previous experience performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature with frequent interruptions and/or distractions.
Knowledge of the Laboratory’s security and safeguards policies, practices, and procedures and
Knowledge of the Laboratory’s computer and information security policies practices, and procedures
Active Q clearance.

While the posted salary range for this position is broad, it is highly unusual for selected applicants to be hired at the top end of the range and more common for selected candidates to grow into the full salary band over time.
This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. The Telework Pilot is in effect from Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2021, but may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion. Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.
Position commitment : Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
