Los Alamos National Laboratory TRU Scientist (TRU Waste Sciences Manager 2/3) in Carlsbad, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Located in Carlsbad, New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory‐Carlsbad Operations Repository Science and Operations (RSO) Program provides technical expertise on transuranic (TRU) waste treatment, packaging, characterization, acceptable knowledge, transportation, inventory, and actinide chemistry to the DOE Carlsbad Field Office (CBFO).

The RSO provides the CBFO with a wide breadth and depth of experience and technical/scientific expertise to assist generator sites in developing resolutions for issues that arise in the TRU waste recovery, remediation, packaging, storage, characterization, transportation, and disposal of TRU waste.

As the TRUScientist level 2 or 3, (non-management position) you will support the RSO teams that provide generator site Technical Assist Program (TAP), Acceptable Knowledge (AK), and Chemical Compatibility Evaluation (CCE) support to the CBFO.

These positions will be filled at either the TRU Scientist 2 level or TRU Scientist 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Job Duties

TRU Scientist 2 (94,100 – 155,700)

The successful candidate will work in the Carlsbad, NM office and serve as staff support for discrete program elements under the direction of the team leader. The successful candidate will be responsible for the evaluation of TRU waste destined for WIPP. The successful candidate will assist generator sites in developing resolutions for the issues that arise in the TRU waste retrieval, remediation, packaging, storage, characterization, transportation, and disposal operations; assist in the research, development, and maintenance of reports detailing the physical, chemical, and radiological properties of TRU waste destined for WIPP; provide peer review of technical reports detailing the chemical and radiological properties of TRU waste; and participate in generator site visits to assist in the development and maintenance of their programs to ensure waste acceptance at the WIPP.

TRU Scientist 3 (103,500 – 172,800)

In addition to the duties outlined at the lower level (TRU Scientist 2), qualification at the TRU Scientist 3 level requires the successful candidate be responsible in leading interface meetings with the WIPP CBFO and M&O; leading functional areas during TAP visits; and leading the development of acceptable knowledge reports and/or peer reviews with little supervision.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience with NQA-1 (or equivalent) compliance.

  • Demonstrated experience presenting complex technical material to a variety of audiences.

  • Demonstrated experience working in compliance with standard industry requirements.

  • Excellent technical writing skills.

  • Demonstrated experience interfacing effectively with all levels of management, employees, customers, and DOE organizations.

  • Experience with state and/or federal regulators.

  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q-clearance.

Additional Job Requirements for TRU Scientist 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the TRU Scientist 3 level requires:

  • Demonstrated experience in authoring scientific publications and/or chemical/radiological-related technical documents.

  • 7+ years industry-related experience.

Education/Experience at the lower level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Environmental Management, Engineering, Mathematics or Computer Information Science and 5 years related experience; or, a combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at the higher level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Environmental Management, Engineering, Mathematics or Computer Information Science and 5 years related experience; or, a combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation oradvanced degree with 2+ years of relevant experience.

Desired Skills

  • Experience with WIPP compliance documents.

  • DOE Weapons Complex process knowledge.

  • Experience in hazardous waste operations, nuclear material or waste processing, or hazardous waste characterization.

  • Experience working with RCRA regulations.

Work Environment: Domestic/foreign travel

Location: This position will be physically located in Carlsbad, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
